It’s been an up and down year so far for live-action remakes of beloved animated films. However, Lilo & Stitch has been a major success in theaters. Just over a month on the big screen, the remake is close to hitting a billion dollars worldwide. Leading up to the release, the marketing included merchandise like new action figures, apparel collections, and Funko Pops, which surely helped the film’s success. Now Funko is back with their latest Stitch Pop.
An Entertainment Earth exclusive, in honor of Lilo & Stitch 2’s announcement and 626 Day, the latest Pop for the popular Disney franchise is Stitch in Sunlounger. This is a Premium Funko Pop with a ton of extra detail. Stitch is seen chilling on the beach in red sunglasses next to his pal Scrump. The latter also has cute matching blue sunglasses. If that wasn’t enough, Stitch has a tasty coconut drink next to him. This is the perfect seasonal Pop for any fan of the series. Given the amount of detail, the figure will be $21.99 USD.
‘Lilo & Stitch’ for a New Generation
While the 2000s weren’t as memorable as the previous Renaissance era for Disney, Lilo & Stitch was arguably the best film of that odd transition period. This was the last decade Disney focused on 2D animation before they fully transitioned to CGI animation with 2010’s Tangled. However, Stitch has reminded us over 20 years later of the emotional power of that rich art style.
In the same breath, the remake has reminded us that live-action remakes can have a place in the theatrical ecosystem if done with care. With a 71% fresh critic rating and an even better 93% verified hot Popcornmeter audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Lilo & Stitch has once again become a major hit for Disney. Since its release in late May, the remake has made over $915 million at the global box office with no signs of stopping. Stores like Target and Walmart have been filled with Stitch products in the last few weeks, which may have helped the rewatchability of the film.
More ‘Lilo & Stitch’ Is on the Way
It’s not a shocker that Lilo & Stitch 2 is already in development given the mega success of the first remake. Whether it adapts Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch remains to be seen. However, one thing is for sure, this is only the beginning of Stitch’s merchandise revival. Stitch has already received a handful of new Funko Pops this year with surely more to come as we wait for the sequel.
