One of the most unpredictable thrillers of the year will finally be available for streaming. Peacock has announced that Drop, the latest movie directed by Christopher Landon, will become a part of their catalog on July 11. The movie premiered in theaters earlier this year, taking in $28 million at the global box office before leaving cinemas. After a short theatrical run, fans of the genre will be able to experience the twists and turns of this wild story in the comfort of their homes.
Drop introduces Violet (Meghann Fahy), a young woman who wants to start dating again after escaping an abusive relationship. The protagonist’s first date with Henry (Brandon Sklenar) turns out to be a dangerous endeavor. Mysterious messages on Violet’s phone reveal that her sister and son are actually in danger, and the only way to save them is to kill her date. Violet’s quest to determine who wanted to hurt her and why kept audiences on the edges of their seats when Drop hit theaters.
While Drop only took in $28 million at the global box office, it’s important to remember that the movie’s reported budget was relatively small. The title was also competing against A Minecraft Movie and Sinners during its theatrical run, with audiences clearly showing a preference for the video game adaptation and Ryan Coogler‘s acclaimed vampire drama. Regardless of the movie’s box office performance, Drop received plenty of acclaimed reviews. The thriller got an 84% Rotten Tomatoes score upon launch.
Christopher Landon’s Experience With Horror
The director of Drop, Christopher Landon had plenty of experience with the horror genre by the time he signed on to work on this year’s thriller. Landon built his career by working on the Paranormal Activity franchise as a writer, until The Marked Ones finally allowed him to become a part of the legacy of the series as a director. The Paranormal Activity movies have scared viewers for more than a decade, and Christopher Landon was a major player in the franchise centered around evil possessions.
After the Paranormal Activity franchise allowed the artist to build a foundation, Christopher Landon went on to work with Blumhouse for the Happy Death Day films. The first movie in the series featured Jessica Rothe as a young woman who was stuck in a time loop ending in her death each day. The concept was similar to Groundhog Day, except for the fact that Tree had to find the person who was killing her over and over again. This experience with the horror genre allowed Landon to keep audiences captivated with every twist and turn seen in Drop.
