With the end of the 2024-2025 TV season came the cancellation of several fan-favorite shows. While the networks were nigh on merciless with their trimming moves, the streaming platforms were not left out either. Case in point, Prime Video decided that after what was a critically acclaimed third season, The Wheel of Time would no longer spin on the streaming platform. Apologies Lord Dragon. The fantasy series is based on the 14-book popular novel series by Robert Jordan, and with an ever-growing cast, sprawling narrative and extensive VFX routines, the stated reason for cancellation. However, it feels like the legend of Rand al’Thor need not end so quickly. So, might The Wheel of Time continue to spin elsewhere?
The Wheel of Time is part of a collection of big-budget fantasy series that have shone in recent years with the likes of HBO’s House of the Dragon, Netflix’s The Witcher, and Prime Video’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, all part of the mix. It isn’t unheard of for a show to move across platforms after cancellation. So what happens with The Wheel of Time? Per a report on TV Line, The Wheel of Time is pretty much done with no signs of the fantasy series being shopped to other platforms. “Well-placed sources confirm for Inside Line that the fantasy saga is not being shopped after being canceled at Prime Video,” the report reads.
What is ‘The Wheel of Time’ About?
The Wheel of Time is set in a fantasy world where humanity’s existence and the Pattern of the Ages are both subtly controlled by the titular Wheel of Time. The One Power is the force that aids the spinning of the Wheel, and also flows through select men and women, giving them incredible powers and abilities. While the men who can touch the One Power are hunted and subdued, the women are in-charge of the hunting, as part of a unique order known as the Aes Sedai. Moiraine Damodred (Rosamund Pike) belongs to the Aes Sedai, but unlike her sister in the Red Ajah, she is focused on a bigger foe, an ancient evil known as the Dark One. To subdue him, she seeks out four young people from a remote village with her companion and Warder, Lan Mandragoran (Daniel Henney). Among the four, Moiraine discovers that one of them, Rand al’Thor (Josha Stradowski), is the Dragon Reborn. A hero prophesied to either save the world or destroy it even as the Dark One and his fanatical followers seek to eliminate him. The show’s third season left some major cliffhangers with its audience, and it seems like they might not get a resolution.
While The Wheel of Time might have stopped spinning for now, there might still be some hope in the future. With its Rotten Tomatoes score rising with every successive season, another streamer might take an interest and revive the show. There is also a fan campaign started after the conclusion of Season 3, with its efforts geared towards seeing The Wheel of Time picked up by another streamer.
