A slightly lesser known but possibly stronger recent series of DC Comics adaptations before James Gunn‘s DCU hits theaters was the Arrowverse on The CW. It began with Arrow, which was a take on Oliver Queen/The Green Arrow, played by Stephen Amell. Another series was Supergirl, starring Melissa Benoist as Kara Danvers/Supergirl. In a recent interview with WatchMojo, Benoist shared her thoughts about the upcoming installments of the DCU, including Gunn’s take on Supergirl with Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, starring Milly Alcock. She told WatchMojo:
“Yeah, of course I’ll support! Once you’ve donned the glyph, you’re part of a very small club of people that has worn capes. So it always feels special when any iteration of the story and the canon comes to life, so I will be there to support. Is Milly Alcock supposed to be in this James Gunn [movie]? I don’t know… I’m more excited for her telling of Supergirl, but I’m biased!”
What Is the Arrowverse?
The franchise began to grow with the success of Arrow, adding The Flash, with Grant Gustin starring as Barry Allen, as well as DC’s Legends of Tomorrow with slightly more obscure comic characters now at the forefront, like Rip Hunter, The A.T.O.M., and Firestorm. Later came shows like Stargirl, Black Lightning, and Batwoman. The final series, which concluded last year, was Superman & Lois; it’s finale paving the way for Gunn’s DCU. While there are DC Comics projects that exist outside of Gunn’s main canon as he’s explained, like Matt Reeves’ The Batman, the Arrowverse was an expansive universe in its own right, so drawing it to a close made sense – except for leaving Legends of Tomorrow on a cliffhanger, which just made a lot of fans sad.
Once the four main shows: Arrow, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, and Supergirl got going, there were several crossover events, with the final one, “Crisis on Infinite Earths,” pulling no punches, even restructuring the multiverse. The interweaving of the shows was at one time poked fun at; The Legends dressed as Supergirl, Green Arrow, and The Flash, with Nate Heywood (Nick Zano) quipping “we should’ve done the crossover.” As for the future of Gunn’s DCU, Superman flies into theaters on July 8, just a few weeks away, and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow recently wrapped filming.
