Sterling K. Brown Teases a “Collision Course” in ‘Paradise’ Season 2 [Exclusive]

Paradise is deep in the weeds right now on production for Season 2, and the show just got a gripping update from its leading star. Sterling K. Brown was tapped for the role of Xavier Collins in Paradise, and he portrays it with enough grace and force that it ensures it would not be shocking to see him recognized with an Emmy nomination. Paradise was renewed for Season 2 before the conclusion of Season 1, and creator Dan Fogelman — who previously worked with Brown on This Is Us — wasted no time rolling the cameras on the follow-up to his hit Hulu series. Brown recently sat down for an interview with Collider’s Christina Radish to promote his upcoming show, Washington Black, and she asked what he was most excited to see in Paradise Season 2:

It’s crazy in them streets. It’s very crazy. For him to be able to step out of Paradise, step out of the bunker, and see how people have been living for the past three years, who didn’t have the opportunity to plan and who didn’t have the resources, etc., we will encounter nefarious and benign. What that looks like, you’ll see once we get to the season. And then, what I find very interesting is what happens when these worlds collide with one another. There is a collision course, and it’s about to go down.”

The biggest twist in Paradise Season 1 comes at the end of the first episode. Sterling K. Brown’s Agent Xavier Collins spends much of the episode investigating the death of Cal Bradford (James Marsden), but things take a sinister turn when it’s revealed everyone is living in an underground bunker. We later learn that this is the result of a volcanic eruption that brought about a tsunami, which allegedly wiped out everyone outside the bunker. However, near the end of the season, when Xavier Collins finally confronts Sinatra (Julianne Nicholson), she reveals to him that there are indeed people living in the outside world, and that his wife Teri, whom he thought was dead, is one of them. Paradise Season 2 will explore the lives of people who have been living outside the bunker since the world descended into chaos.

Is James Marsden Coming Back for ‘Paradise’ Season 2?

It has already been confirmed that Sterling K. Brown and Julianne Nicholson will reprise their roles as Xavier Collins and Sinatra in Season 2. Newcomers Shailene Woodley and Thomas Doherty will also star, but further casting details are being kept under wraps. Despite his death in the opening episode of Paradise Season 1, flashbacks ensure Marsden has a role to play throughout the season. Dan Fogelman recently confirmed to Collider that it’s unclear if he’ll return, as he’s a busy man right now. Marsden is currently filming Avengers: Doomsday for Marvel.

Paradise Season 2 is currently in production and is expected to premiere next year. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates and coverage of the show, and watch the first season of Paradise on Hulu.
