Starz’s 90% Rotten Tomatoes Time Travel Romance Returns With a Twist in Epic New Trailer

Outlander: Blood of My Blood is less than a month away. The prequel series to the massively successful Outlander is coming to Starz on August 8. The series will show the dual love stories of Jamie Fraser’s (Sam Heughan) and Claire Beauchamp’s (Caitríona Balfe) parents. The show takes fans back to 18th Century Scotland as well as World War I Era Europe. In the trailer released by Starz, their parents, Ellen MacKenzie (Harriet Slater) and Brian Fraser (Jamie Roy), and Julia Moriston (Hermione Corfield) and Henry Beauchamp (Jeremy Irvine), respectively, find their stories intertwined when Julia ends up in the past after a car accident. As Henry anxiously searches in the present for Julia, she’s in 18th Century Scotland more or less playing matchmaker with Jamie’s parents, further tying that invisible string together that will give us Jamie and Claire’s epic love story that fans watched for eight seasons.

‘Outlander: Blood of My Blood’ Will Feature More Than Just Two Love Stories

It’s revealed in the trailer that Ella and Brian are from warring Scottish Clans. Their fathers hated one another, and they don’t discover that fact until after they’ve more or less had their 18th Century meet-cute. Ella seems far more torn by the revelation than Brian, who finds any way to be around her throughout the trailer, further deepening their bond against the expectations of their families, namely Ella’s brother. Matthew Roberts, creator of the prequel series, told Entertainment Weekly earlier this year that “One of the things we wanted to explore on Blood of My Blood is not only the family dynamics, but the clan dynamics.”

Roberts explains that it will continue to set the stage for the events of Outlander. He explains they want to explore, “how the intrigue and the political backstabbing created the environment that creates Jamie Fraser and what he was born to.” Roberts tells Entertainment Weekly that it also includes characters we’ve already seen in Outlander, such as Murtagh Fitzgibbons Fraser, who is played by Rory Alexander in the prequel and first played by Duncan LaCroix in Outlander. He says:

“Who they become isn’t who they are now. We know and love Murtaugh as being this constant companion, but he wasn’t born that way. He wasn’t born just to follow Jamie around. How did he get that way? Who was he prior to being this very stoic, closed-hearted man? because he is very, very closed off. But the Murtagh you meet in Blood of My Blood isn’t that way.”

Outlander: Blood of My Blood premieres August 8. Stay with Collider for the latest updates.
