Only one month remains until Adam Sandler takes to the green once more for Happy Gilmore 2, but before that, Netflix plans to take a tour through the history of other films from Saturday Night Live alumni. The long-running sketch comedy series has produced no shortage of stars who have gone on to lead memorable movies, from Mike Myers and Dana Carvey‘s Wayne’s World to Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi‘s The Blues Brothers, and beyond. Now, Collider can exclusively share that the streaming service is bringing a sizable selection of features from SNL favorites to its catalog on July 1. Additionally, for fans in New York, a selection of movies will make their way back to the big screen through Netflix’s Paris Theater in New York City starting on July 11 and running through August 13.
Unsurprisingly, one of the films that will be featured in the Netflix collection, both on streaming and at the Paris Theater, is the original Happy Gilmore, which introduced Sandler’s foul-mouthed golfer to the world. Released in 1996, it transcended its initial cult classic status to become a defining movie for the golf community, filled with the comedian’s signature humor, a strong cast, and a now-iconic fight scene with Bob Barker. It follows the titular former hockey player as he realizes his skills can be translated to the game of golf, spurring him to take the game by storm in hopes of saving his grandmother’s house from foreclosure. His Kevin James team-up, Grown Ups, will also bring more laughs from Sandler to the platform, joining a few of his other previous efforts that are already on Netflix, including Grown Ups 2 and 50 First Dates.
Other new additions to Netflix provide a mix of SNL history and quality, including two with direct ties to sketch comedy series in the Aykroyd-led Coneheads and both Wayne’s World films. Also coming soon is the cult classic Good Burger with Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell, National Lampoon’s Animal House with Belushi, the Todd Phillips-directed Road Trip, Chris Farley‘s Tommy Boy, and Ben Stiller‘s comedy favorite Zoolander. However, nobody is as well represented on the list as Will Ferrell, with six movies coming this July, including both Anchorman films, Blades of Glory, Night at the Roxbury, Old School, and his Mark Wahlberg two-hander, The Other Guys. Some of these titles will also be found at the Paris Theater, but Netflix plans to widen the net even further for more special screenings, with Eddie Murphy‘s Coming to America, Billy Murray‘s Groundhog Day, and the Murray and Chevy Chase classic Caddyshack, among many others coming to the New York-based venue.
What Is ‘Happy Gilmore 2’ About?
The lineup of theatrical and streaming releases all leads up to Happy Gilmore 2, which premieres on Netflix on July 25 and will hit the Paris Theater on the same day. Once again written by Sandberg and frequent collaborator Tim Herlihy, the film picks up with Happy after a long and successful career in the PGA Tour that has seen him enshrined alongside golf’s all-time greats. He’s since retired from the sport and started a big, happy family with Virginia Venit (Julie Bowen), but, as seen in the latest trailer, he dusts off his clubs and gets back in the game to help pay for his daughter’s dreams of ballet school. His big comeback tour won’t be smooth, but with a new, inexperienced caddie played by Bad Bunny and a reinvigorated long drive, he’s ready to capture the attention of the nation. That also means once again drawing the ire of Shooter McGavin (Christopher McDonald), who seeks to take back the title and his life from Happy.
Sandler’s long-awaited sequel has no shortage of new and returning star power to work with. Although he’s no longer directing, Dennis Dugan will be returning to the cast, as will Ben Stiller‘s Hal L. In terms of newcomers, Sadie and Sunny Sandler will be joining their father, alongside Blake Clark, Maxwell Jacob Friedman, Ethan Cutkosky, Philip Schneider, Conor Sherry, John Daly, Travis Kelce, and a smattering of professional golfers from Netflix’s Full Swing series, including Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler, Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka, Justin Thomas, and Will Zalatoris. The trailer also showed a ton of other celebrities making appearances, from Jeopardy! host Ken Jennings to sports commentator Stephen A. Smith and more.
Netflix’s SNL movie collection will begin streaming on July 1 and will be found through a special landing page. Visit the official Paris Theater Party on SNL page when it goes live to see the full schedule of features that will be on the big screen and purchase tickets for the screenings from July 11 through August 13.
