Season 2 of Netflix’s Smash Hit Animated Series ’Blue Eye Samurai’ Will Be “Bigger, Wilder, and More Emotional”

At the end of 2023, Netflix released Season 1 of Blue Eye Samurai, an adult animated series with an original story of revenge which had audiences hooked from the very start. In the animated series, Mizu, voiced by Maya Erskine (PEN15), is a half-Japanese, half-white woman who lives in Edo-period Japan. It is a time period when the borders of the nation are closed to the outside world, meaning her whiteness is a sign and source of disgrace. The show was created by Michael Green and Amber Noizumi, with Jane Wu serving as executive producer. Production on the second season is already underway and Netflix’s Annecy Animation Film Festival slate offered an opportunity for some insight into what comes next.

Co-creators Green and Noizumi, alongside executive producer Wu, were all in attendance, albeit virtually. Dylan Thomas, director of Adult Animation for Netflix, made the introductions before going on to tease the scripts. Per What’s On Netflix, Thomas’ comments read, “While I can’t say much, I will say that somehow the scripts and the storyboards are crazier, they’re bigger, and even more heart-wrenching than season one. They really outdid themselves.”

Upon its premiere, Blue Eye Samurai received a wide range of accolades and commendations. With scores of 97% and 93% on the aggregator platform, Rotten Tomatoes, Blue Eye Samurai is clearly a darling of both critics and viewers. The admirers have since turned to award wins, including six Annie Awards, a Peabody nomination, and three juried Emmy wins in Character Design, Production Design, and Storyboard. “When we started Blue Eye Samurai, we had no idea if anyone would care,” said Noizumi to fans. “We just wanted to tell this story. But the fans showed up, thank you.”

Revenge Remains Mizu’s Catalyst in ‘Blue Eye Samurai’ Season 2

Revenge was a key motivator driving Mizu forward throughout the story in Season 1, and it’s likely that pattern will hold in the coming season. “Being a samurai is a demon’s path, littered with death,” says Mizu in a new clip shared at the festival. “Revenge does not hesitate. And I will have it.” Mizu is headed to London, and it’s been confirmed that fan favorites will all be returning, including Taigen, Ringo, Akemi, and The Swordmaker. “There are also going to be maybe some people you thought died… who maybe are still alive,” hinted co-creator Noizumi.

Back in 2024, Collider, through our Editor-in-Chief Steve Weintraub, sat down with Blue Eye Samurai co-creators Green and Noizumi to discuss the long-term plans for the Netflix series after its first season dropped. During the chat, it was revealed how many seasons and episodes were mapped out:

“Currently, we’re planning for three seasons. We have a second season pick-up, one hopes the third season will exist because we certainly have plans for it. We’re imagining three right now. I think we said four once in an interview, possibly with Collider, and it suddenly became ‘the lore!’ Things you say when you’re not used to being interviewed.”
