Rebecca Yarros’ Fourth Wing is becoming one of the most buzzed-about romantasy series of the decade — and now the Amazon adaptation is officially in excellent hands. According to a Deadline report, Jac Schaeffer, the Emmy-nominated creator of WandaVision and Agatha All Along, is now set to serve as showrunner, executive producer, and writer on Fourth Wing.
Schaeffer joins the project as part of her new overall deal with Amazon MGM Studios. She replaces Moira Walley-Beckett, who initially boarded the show last summer. In another major move, Fallout producers Kilter Films (led by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy) have now joined Michael B. Jordan’s Outlier Society as production partners. So they all seriously mean business.
Adapted from Yarros’ globally beloved Empyrean book series, Fourth Wing tells the story of 20-year-old Violet Sorrengail, who is forced to abandon her quiet life as a Scribe and enter the deadly Basgiath War College — where the only way to graduate is to survive. Along the way, Violet becomes entangled with Xaden Riorson, a morally complex dragon rider whose enemies-to-lovers romance with her has become one of the series’ biggest hooks. But the real hook of the series, at least to this writer, is Violent’s telekinetic relationship to her dragons, Tairn (think an extremely grumpy grandpa) and Andarna (the sweetest puppy to ever exist).
How Popular Is ‘Fourth Wing’?
With Fourth Wing, Iron Flame, and Onyx Storm already released and two more books on the way, the fandom around the series has exploded. Hundreds of midnight release parties for Onyx Storm were held across the U.S. and Canada, and Yarros herself attended the LA event, where she offered a major update.
“I’ve read two versions of the script,” Yarros told fans. “I kicked my feet the entire time.” She also praised the adaptation’s faithfulness and the writing of Walley-Beckett before the showrunner switch, saying: “Moira’s done such an amazing job capturing everyone’s voice and the dialogue that you guys love and just the energy and spirit of the book.”
Despite Walley-Beckett’s departure, Amazon seems determined to keep that same spirit alive — and Schaeffer’s résumé speaks for itself. Her work on WandaVision earned her Emmy and WGA nominations, and she’s now in 2025 Emmy contention for Agatha All Along.
As for the future of Violet and Xaden? Onyx Storm delivered a major twist, setting the stage for their relationship to return to its “enemies” phase — a development fans hope will reignite the original tension. While there’s no official casting news yet, Yarros’ comments suggest scripts are moving forward quickly, and production is inching closer.
