In Jennifer Kaytin Robinson we trust. “We” being fans of the slasher franchise I Know What You Did Last Summer. After nearly two decades, the bloodsoaked universe will finally be enjoying a renaissance this summer thanks to Robinson’s vision behind what will serve as a sequel to the 1997 movie of the same name and its 1998 follow-up, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer. Known for her work as the co-scribe behind Thor: Love and Thunder and the friend and filmmaker who gently pushed Sarah Michelle Gellar back into the spotlight (albeit for a supporting role, but it was a start!) in Netflix’s Do Revenge, the I Know What You Did Last Summer fandom couldn’t be more excited to have Robinson on board. We are so excited, in fact, that many are already wondering if she would be down to helm a sequel should the movie become the summer slasher hit that we’re expecting.
There’s more than one piece of good news in the answer to that question, which Robinson revealed during a special screening of the film’s brand-new trailer. At the panel, at which Collider’s Aidan Kelley was in attendance, the moderator asked the filmmaker and her co-scribe, Sam Lansky, if they would be interested in continuing the story in the future, to which Robinson laughed and said, “Sony! I don’t greenlight that!” pointing to the final decision being in the hands of the studio.
Giving more of a concrete answer, she added,
“Yes, yes, yes, yes, and we have an idea. Some people survive. Some people could be in a sequel.”
When asked about the potential sequel to the sequel’s title and whether it would mirror I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, Robinson said, “We’ve gotten creative.”
Jennifer Kaytin Robinson Has Previously Said She’d Be Game for a Sequel
This isn’t the first time that Robinson has entertained the idea of a follow-up to her I Know What You Did Last Summer, but it’s certainly the most promising. Back in May, the filmmaker took to her X account to host a little AMA with her followers. Of the many questions asked, one fan inquired about the possibility of another movie, to which Robinson wrote back,
“if you all go see it and love it!!! sequel is in all of your hands. im ready for it.”
Beyond the world of I Know What You Did Last Summer, the AMA also informed us that the filmmaker is already on-board to bring a different piece of ‘90s IP back to the big screen. Trying their best to guess which production would move forward with Robinson’s aesthetic, folks asked about The Craft, The Faculty, and 10 Things I Hate About You — all of which Robinson shut down, never revealing the secret project.
In just one month, plenty of secrets will be revealed when I Know What You Did Last Summer arrives in cinemas on July 18.
