One of Pixar’s best animations of all time has found success once more, years after it landed in theaters, and it’s a well-deserved one at that. Produced by the animation studio for Disney, Ratatouille was a critical and commercial hit upon its release in June 2007 and was a recipient of multiple accolades at major awards events. Now with the pic available on streaming, it’s reminding fans and showing newcomers what a brilliant watch it is, as proven by its status on the global charts.
Per FlixPatrol, Ratatouille has entered the top 5 movies on Disney+ globally, taking the #5 spot, right below Elio and above 2005’s Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch. At the same time, Snow White, Captain America: Brave New World, and Sharks Up Close With Bertie Gregory are in the first three spots. Brad Bird wrote and directed the animated comedy, with Brad Lewis producing from an original idea by Jan Pinkava. Furthermore, the voices of the beloved characters were provided by Patton Oswalt, Lou Romano, Ian Holm, Janeane Garofalo, Peter O’Toole, Brian Dennehy, Peter Sohn, and Brad Garrett.
Ratatouille takes place mostly in Paris and tells the story of Remy (Oswalt), a resident of the city who appreciates good food and has quite a sophisticated palate. He dreams of becoming a chef at Auguste Gusteau’s (Garrett) restaurant so he can create and enjoy culinary masterpieces to his heart’s delight, but the only problem is that Remy is a rat. When he winds up in the sewer beneath one of Paris’ finest restaurants, he finds himself ideally placed to realize his dream and tries to achieve it by forming an unlikely alliance with the restaurant’s garbage boy, Alfredo Linguini (Romano).
How Well Did ‘Ratatouille’ Perform Following Its Release?
Produced with a budget of $150 million, Ratatouille amassed more than four times the amount, grossing $623.7 million worldwide. It finished its theatrical run as the sixth highest-grossing film of 2007 and the year’s second highest-grossing animated film behind Shrek the Third. Critics also applauded the comedy-drama for its excellent development, and it currently boasts a 96% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes, with the consensus stating: “Fast-paced and stunningly animated, Ratatouille adds another delightfully entertaining entry and a rather unlikely hero to the Pixar canon.” That’s not all! Ratatouille won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature and earned several more nominations, including Best Original Screenplay.
