For only the second time in history, the annual box office rankings could be topped by a non-English-language film. This happened in 2020, when Demon Slayer: Mugen Train led the field amid mass global shutdowns, and it’s poised to happen again this year, with the Chinese film Ne Zha 2 perched at the top of the charts. The movie has grossed a massive $2.2 billion worldwide, and it will take a big screen event of Avatar: Fire and Ash‘s magnitude to overtake it. No Hollywood film has been able to pass the $1 billion mark yet, but a new film recently entered the $100 million club. It’s a different matter altogether that the film in question, Elio, has had a tremendously disappointing run so far.
On its 19th day of release at the global box office, Elio finally passed the $100 million milestone. The movie cost a reported $150 million to produce, and is poised to become Pixar’s biggest-ever flop, not including the handful of films that the studio debuted directly at home during the pandemic era. In fact, Elio still hasn’t overtaken the top-rated Pixar film of that era, Soul, which found an impressive audience in overseas markets. Elio reportedly had a tumultuous production, with much of it being reworked late in the game. The studio’s decision to go in a new direction resulted in actor America Ferrera dropping out, and original director Adrian Molina choosing not to stay on.
Despite these difficulties, the movie opened to mostly positive reviews. It holds an 82% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics’ consensus reads, “Catapulted by its theme of building self-esteem, Pixar’s latest cosmic wonder Elio boasts a fanciful world of original creations to dazzling effect.” In his review, Collider’s Ross Bonaime wrote that the movie represents the “imagination, inventiveness, and emotion that the studio has become well-known for.”
‘Elio’ Is Climbing Up the 2025 Box Office Rankings
Elio has now overtaken the $99 million lifetime global haul of Jason Statham‘s A Working Man, which debuted earlier this year to mixed reviews but a positive audience response. Since its release on home video, the action-thriller has been performing exceptionally well on the Prime Video charts. A Working Man marked Statham’s second film in a row with director David Ayer, after 2024’s surprise hit The Beekeeper, which grossed over $150 million worldwide. You can watch Elio in theaters, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
