‘Outer Banks’ Star Opens Up About Possibly Returning for a Potential Legacy Sequel

The year 2025 kicked off with a bit of sad news for fans of the teen drama Outer Banks, as the streaming giant, Netflix, announced that the series would not be returning as part of the 2025 slate. Midway through the year, it was announced that Season 5, which will be the final season of the hit series, had begun production. As it is pretty early days so far, exactly when Outer Banks Season 5 is going to be released is not known. Working on this final season of the teen drama is series star Madelyn Cline, who is also preparing for the premiere of I Know What You Did Last Summer. Outer Banks Season 5 is expected to release sometime in 2026, and Cline has offered an update on that show and whether or not she’d be doing a legacy sequel.

Cline’s rise to stardom within the industry can be directly linked to Outer Banks, which, upon its premiere in 2020, rapidly became a hit for the streamer. The actress is part of a quartet of four actors who have appeared in every single episode of the show across its entire run. Cline, who plays Sarah Cameron, is joined by Chase Stokes as John B. Routledge, Madison Bailey as Kiara Carrera, and Jonathan Daviss as Pope Heyward. Cline spoke to Screen Rant, and opened up about the show’s future beyond Season 5. On the question of whether we’ll get a legacy sequel of Outer Banks. Her response reads:

“Hey, you know what? I would love to come back and do a little cameo. I’ve already told Jonas – anything in the Outer Banks universe, let me come back and do something really fun and silly.”

Following the announcement that production on Season 5 of the series was on the way. Netflix shared images from the set. Before discussing the prospect of returning for a legacy sequel, Cline described what it has been like being on set. “Oh God, it’s so funny. Everyone’s in such a good mood – not in an “oh my God, we’re so excited to be finished” way, but because we realize this is our last go-around,” Cline said. Adding later on, “It’s fun, but it’s fucking hot! Yesterday, they put us in the swamp, and I was like, “Oh hell, where’s the good attitude?” Because right now I’m covered in 10 pounds of heat, swamp water, mosquitoes, sweat, and fake tan. My sensory issues are going crazy.”

Madelyn Cline Has Endured Some “Very Bizarre” Attention to Her Appearance

The show was written and created for television by Shannon Burke alongside Jonas and Josh Pate. While the show has brought significant fame and opportunities for those who star on the show, it does have some downsides. Speaking with Allure magazine, Cline — who has now appeared in other projects like This is the Night and Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery — discussed the fixation sections of Outer Banks‘ fanbase has with her body. “People love to pay attention to weight specifically,” she told the publication. “It’s very bizarre to me. From season to season on Outer Banks, my appearance has changed with lots of factors: stress, breakups, healthy or unhealthy habits with food. It’s normal life. But the camera, swear to God, picks up everything. Like, damn. Can I not be on my period? Can I not have a beer the night before?”
