Despite a passionate fan base and a campaign that has seen everything from social media rallies to physical billboards, Our Flag Means Death remains docked. But in this industry, nothing is ever a foregone conclusion. The pirate comedy, created by David Jenkins and starring Rhys Darby as the unhinged “Gentleman Pirate” Stede Bonnet, was axed by HBO after just two seasons. Now, with most of the creative crew moving on to new ventures, including Darby himself, everyone is eager to find out if there’s any light at the end of this tunnel.
In a recent interview with Screen Rant, conducted by John Orquiola, Darby addressed the future, or lack thereof, of the series. The conversation primarily centered around Darby’s latest project, a guest role in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3. But the question that’s been on every fan’s mind inevitably surfaced — Is there still hope for Our Flag Means Death to set sail once more? Here is what he had to say:
“Oh, of course! Of course. But I’m pretty sure that ship has sailed. You know, we’ve been trying to rehoist those flags for a while, and yeah. It’s just the way the world is right now, I guess. It just doesn’t seem to be happening. But of course! I’m always open. That was a fantastic character that I enjoyed playing. So yeah, always open to anything.”
While this might not be the emphatic reaffirmation many fans had hoped for, it is a bittersweet realization that, at the moment, HBO isn’t planning to steer the show back into production anytime soon. His openness might be a silver lining, and hopefully, somewhere down the line, someone else might have a second look at it. Set in the early 18th century during the Golden Age of Piracy, the series follows the misadventures of gentleman-turned-pirate Stede Bonnet and his crew aboard the Revenge as they attempt to establish themselves as pirates.
What Has Rhys Darby Been Up To In Recent Times?
Rhys Darby has had his plate full since Our Flag Means Death came to an end. Most notably, he scored a guest-star role in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3. His fans will be eager to watch how he makes the transition into a series that’s topping streaming charts across platforms like Amazon Prime Video. He has also appeared as Alistair Tully, the Duke of Greybog, in Season 2, Episode 12 of the sitcom Night Court, which sadly, met the same devastating fate as OFMD. Darby also starred alongside his longtime collaborator and Our Flag Means Death co-star Taika Waititi in the sports comedy drama film Next Goal Wins. Early this year, he was part of the ensemble line-up of the action comedy film, Love Hurts, which marked the directorial debut of Jonathan Eusebio.
