Only Murders in the Building was renewed for a fifth season in September 2024, and the show has managed to continually defy the set norms of modern streaming as it releases new episodes on a yearly basis. The series premiered on Hulu in 2021 and became an instant hit for the streamer. Production officially got underway back in March, and things seem to have ramped up pretty quickly. Only Murders in the Building Season 5 might not have a release date, but a new update means that the show is drawing ever closer to a return.
Per a post shared on the official Only Murders in the Building X account, a behind-the-scenes video announces that production on Season 5 has officially wrapped. Featuring in the video are series guest stars Logan Lerman, Renée Zellweger, and Téa Leoni, as the trio attempt to announce the news. However, the trio’s moment in the sunshine is snuffed out when series leads, Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez, interject. After a brief exchange, the show’s cast proclaim “That’s a wrap on season 5 of Only Murders in the Building” and are cheered on by the show’s crew.
Coming off of the show’s most star-studded seasons yet, which featured the likes of Eugene Levy, Eva Longoria, Zack Galifianakis, Molly Shannon, among others. Only Murders in the Building will look to continue one of its positive trends. In a modern world where streaming shows have an incessantly inconsistent schedule with breaks lasting up to three years. Only Murders in the Building has bucked that trend as the show has been fairly consistent with its release schedule over its first four seasons. Each season is released either in June or August and with Season 5 wrapping production in June, just like Season 4. Should the pre-established pattern hold, Season 5 should premiere in August.
‘Only Murders in the Building’ Season 5 Continues To Bring the Stars
Only Murders in the Building is famed for being able to attract several star names. Joining the aforementioned Lerman, Zellweger, and Leoni, the new season will also feature other potential suspects, including Jermaine Fowler, Christoph Waltz, Keegan-Michael Key, and Beanie Feldstein. The coming season will also see Meryl Streep return once again to play the role of Loretta Durkin, aka Mrs. Oliver Putnam. Series executive producer Dan Fogelman, in a conversation with Collider’s Aidan Kelley on the red carpet of the Newport Beach TV Fest, Fogelman discussed the show’s ability to consistently draw in incredible talent:
“It’s really good and, as always, there’s a new guest cast coming in, players who become a role in the big season and, because of Steve and Marty and Selena and John Hoffman and the way he works, all these amazing people want to be part of the show. And it’s one thing when you just get big guest stars to come in and do something, and it’s another when they come in and kill. And it’s been really exciting watching these new actors come in who are going to make some noise with it and just absolutely be hysterical and funny and dangerous in all the right ways. That’s been something… I’m looking forward to people seeing what I’ve already gotten to see.”
