Nicolas Cage kicked off the year by starring in Gunslingers, the critically panned R-rated Western currently available to rent or purchase on Prime Video, but another Western outing from the star has made a shocking return to streaming charts. Cage stars alongside Ryan Keira Armstrong (Star Wars: Skeleton Crew) in The Old Way, the 2023 Western following an old gunslinger and his daughter who come face to face with the son of a man he murdered years ago. The Old Way began streaming on Tubi not long ago, and the film wasted no time claiming the top spot on the streamer’s charts, sitting at #1 at the time of writing. The film was poorly received by critics, earning a “rotten” 32% on Rotten Tomatoes, but a solid 70% rating on the audience-driven Popcornmeter.

Carl W. Lucas wrote the script for The Old Way, and Brett Donowho directed the film. Lucas is best known for his work as a scribe on Illegal and The Wave, and Donowho previously worked with Bruce Willis on Acts of Violence, which is currently streaming on Peacock and Pluto TV. The Old Way came at an interesting time for Cage — he was only a few months away from starring as Dracula in Renfield, the vampire horror movie with Nicholas Hoult. Not long after that, he made his strange Superman cameo in The Flash, the 2023 DC movie that flopped spectacularly. Cage is an Oscar-winner for his role in the 1995 film Leaving Las Vegas, and he was nominated for an Academy Award seven years later in Adaptation, the high-concept comedy with Meryl Streep and Tilda Swinton.
