In February, Emmy nominee Mindy Kaling hit the world with one of this year’s most bingeable series, starring a Hollywood icon in the lead, and we’re still not over it. Titled Running Point, the sports comedy premiered on Netflix on February 27 to critical acclaim and was quickly renewed for another run. It’s now been months since fans have heard any update regarding the sophomore season, but that’s set to change as there’s finally news about its impending production and release.
The highly anticipated Running Point Season 2 is scheduled to begin production next month with a preliminary filming start date set for August 11 according to What’s on Netflix. The installment will then shoot for around three months and some, with a tentative wrap date set for November 20, of this year. Fuerthrmore, it will return to its filming home of Los Angeles, California. This update implies that the upcoming season will certainly not debut this year but the outlet suggestst a possible April 2026 release.
Running Point, inspired by the LA Lakers and its president Jeanie Buss, follows Isla Gordon who after a scandal forces her brother to resign, is appointed president of the Los Angeles Waves. The Waves is one of the most storied professional basketball franchises and owned by her family. Isla is ambitious and often overlooked so, she has to prove to her skeptical brothers, the board, and the larger sports community that she was the right choice for the job.
When Did ‘Running Point’ Get Renewed?
Considering its instant sucess following its release, it was a no-brainer for Running Point to receive a renewal in just a week. The series spent five weeks in the Netflix top 10, clocking 168.90 million hours watched, which is up to 33.3 million views globally. It also spent time in the weekly top 10s of 89 countries. Upon the renewal on March 6, co-creator and EP on the show, Mindy Kaling expressed excitement to deliver another entertaining chapter of the comedy while also appreciating everyone who contributed to its success including the series team and the audience. The first season of Running Point starred Kate Hudson as Isla and she was joined Brenda Song, Drew Tarver, Scott MacArthur, Fabrizio Guido, Toby Sandeman, Chet Hanks, Jay Ellis, Max Greenfield and Justin Theroux.
