‘Masters of the Universe’ Star and ’80s Icon, 67, Hints at an Appearance in Jared Leto’s Reboot

Arguably one of the greatest toy-based shows ever made is back on Hollywood’s radar, and it might be bringing one of its original champions with it. A rebooted big-screen version of Masters of the Universe is in the queue to be released in 2026, with Dolph Lundgren, who played the lead role of He-Man in the original 1987 movie, teasing a possible return. While an impressive cast has been assembled to recreate this classic, it stands to reason not to imagine a planet Eternia without the original He-Man, just like it sounds a bit off to imagine Indiana Jones without Harrison Ford.

Purple Hearts star Nicholas Galitzine will bring the character to life in the reboot. The actor recently announced the end of filming, bringing finality to a project that was initially muted in 2007. In a recent interview with Men’s Journal, Lundgren was asked about his possible involvement in the new film. His response? Coy, but laced with enough ambiguity to keep fans hopeful of a possible cameo appearance somewhere down the line. Here is what he had to say about the upcoming film:

“If you think a new He-Man movie makes you feel old, I feel old! I was in it! They’ve been trying to remake the picture for at least 15 years, and I’m glad they’re doing it. There’s a great cast, a great crew. It’s a big budget picture with MGM/Amazon. I think they’re doing a great job. Prince Adam has a bit more romanticism to the character than other superheroes. Marvel and DC are a little harder-edged. There’s something magical and childlike about it. And even though they’re kind of making an adult picture, there’s something soft and positive about that character. It’s a bit of a secret, but I can’t say much. But yeah, maybe I’ll get involved somehow. We’ll see.”

Joining Galitzine is Riverdale’s Camila Mendes, who is set to portray Prince Adam’s Royal Guard Captain and potential love interest, Teela. Jared Leto is set to appear as the franchise’s villain, Skeletor; Alison Brie will play Evil-Lyn; Idris Elba will play Man-at-Arms; and Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson (Captain America: Brave New World) will appear as Fisto, He-Man’s warrior ally. Other cast members include Kojo Attah as Tri-Klops, Morena Baccarin as The Sorceress, James Purefoy as King Randor, Charlotte Riley as Queen Marlena, and Sasheer Zamata as Suzie.

Dolph Lundgren’s Career Has Witnessed a Renaissance in Recent Years

Lundgren’s career has been enjoying a bit of a renaissance lately. Between The Expendables franchise and appearances in Aquaman and Creed II, the Swedish star has proven he still has a lot to offer. A role in the new Masters of the Universe, even if as a seasoned veteran passing the torch, will be a masterstroke for the reboot’s PR machine. However, before then, though, he is billed to make an appearance in the upcoming action thriller Hellfire, scheduled for release in 2025.

Directed by Travis Knight (Bumblebee) from a script by Chris Butler, Masters of the Universe will hit theaters on June 5, 2026. Stay tuned to Collider for future updates.
