Jason Statham has action movies trending on various streaming services, but the most recent vehicle from the iconic star is performing even better than expected. Statham stars alongside Michael Peña and David Harbour in A Working Man, the conspiracy thriller following Levon Cade (Statham), a man who left his old profession behind only to be called back to it after a local girl vanishes. A Working Man began streaming on Amazon MGM+ last week, and the film has wasted no time climbing to the top of the streamer’s charts, sitting at #1 at the time of writing. A Working Man grossed $88 million at the box office, just over its $40 million reported budget, and it earned a “rotten” 47% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes but a “verified hot” 87% on the audience-driven Popcornmeter.
A Working Man is the latest team-up between Statham and director David Ayer. The duo first worked together last year on The Beekeeper, the smash his action vehicle that premiered to rave reviews and grossed four times its budget at the global box office. A sequel to The Beekeeper is already in the works — one that’s expected to begin filming this year — but Ayer has other responsibilities that will keep him from returning as director. Ayer made a name for himself in the early 2000s, first with his work on End of Watch, the acclaimed police procedural starring Peña and Jake Gyllenhaal. Just two years later, he teamed up with Brad Pitt for Fury, a WWII film with Jon Bernthal. Ayer will reunite with Pitt on Heart of the Beast, an upcoming action film with J.K. Simmons.
