The last six months or so have been peppered with updates about upcoming projects for James Gunn‘s DCU. After the launch of the DCU with Creature Commandos, eyes have been looking ahead to Superman, releasing next month. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Gunn talked about his upcoming take on the Man of Steel as well as another DC Comics adaptation that, while not a part of his DCU, is still making headlines. The 2022 film, The Batman, starred Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne, and a sequel, The Batman Part II, is still happening, even with everything going on with Gunn’s DCU. While one may expect there to be a conflict if Matt Reeves‘ Batman isn’t a part of the DCU, it’s just the opposite, but any news seems to have fans champing at the bit for the installment. Gunn is stressing patience, colorfully:
“Listen, we’re supposed to get a script in June. I hope that happens. We feel really good about it. Matt’s excited. I talk to Matt all the time. I’m totally excited about it. So we can’t wait to read the scripts, but we haven’t read it yet, if that’s your question. People should get off Matt’s nuts because it’s like, let the guy write the screenplay in the amount of time he needs to write it. That’s just the way it is. He doesn’t owe you something because you like his movie. I mean, you like his movie because of Matt. So let Matt do things the way he does.”
What Is Next for DC Comic Adaptations?
Gunn’s Superman flies into theaters on July 8, so we have just a few short weeks to go until we get to meet David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, among others. Filming also recently wrapped on Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which sees Millie Alcock (House of the Dragon) take on the role of Kara Zor-El. Gunn has confirmed or outlined multiple projects in development for the DCU, but when speaking with Entertainment Weekly, he doubled down that he wants his franchise to be accessible at any point. “I am really trying to be careful that anybody can dip in and see the story that is up next and not feel like they’re missing information.” He uses Peacemaker as an example:
“I’m trying to keep it so that you don’t have to see Superman to see Supergirl, for example. Even though there’s a lot of stuff in Superman that leads to Peacemaker, you certainly don’t need to see it to see Peacemaker. It’s just good if you have, but we also say ‘Previously in the DCU’ before every episode, so the TV stuff’s pretty easy.”
