Invincible Season 3 premiered earlier in the year and concluded with one of the highest-rated episodes on TV ever. The series has already been confirmed for a fourth season, which will arrive on Prime Video sometime next year. The third season took Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun) on quite a journey as he faced down some of his toughest challenges yet. Besides having to deal with an impatient younger brother, Mark was also saddled with having to stall and prevent the invasion of Earth by the Viltrumites. Season 3 of the animated series saw Mark square off in a fight against Conquest (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), second only to Grand Regent Thragg in terms of strength in the entire Viltrumite army. Despite having an emotional and impactful story, Invincible‘s third season was plagued by a recurring criticism — the animation quality.
The Season 3 finale saw Mark’s rivalry with Conquest come to a head, as he stared down his toughest foe yet. The animation in the fight somewhat addressed fans’ complaints. However, series creator, Robert Kirkman, promises that Season 4 will take the animation to the next level. Speaking with Deadline recently, Kirkman discussed his comic adaptions, and when quizzed on the Conquest battle from Season 3, the beloved comic book writer reveals how it doesn’t compare to what’s in store in Season 4 and beyond.
“I mean, until some of the stuff that’s coming up in Season 4, snd that’s also by design. We’re trying to make the show an escalating show. So that, every season, in some sense, tops the season before it. It may top emotionally or physically. We’re not going to be able to stage bigger and bigger battles every season until the show becomes impossible to produce. But we are planning aspects that will elevate every season so that when you watch the show, you get a sense of growth.”
Mark Grayson Will Take A Darker Turn in ‘Invincible’ Season 4
Besides his confrontation with the Viltrumites and Conquest, Season 3 of Invincible saw Mark become a kind of father figure to his younger half-brother, Oliver (Christian Convery). While Mark carefully seeks to preserve human life as much as possible, Oliver is more than happy to indulge in killing his enemies, much like their father, Omni-Man (JK Simmons). However, that philosophy shifted somewhat when Atom Eve (Gillian Jacobs) was almost killed during a brutal battle against a Viltrumite towards the end of Season 3. Kirkman goes on to reveal that Mark will take a darker turn in Season 4.
“But the interesting note over the course of Season 3 is that Oliver says very harsh things that make you worry. Then, by the end of the season, the completion of Mark’s arc is that he’s more aligned with Oliver than he was before. So, by the end of this season, you should be worried for where Mark is headed in Season 4 and beyond.”
Exactly what happens in the coming season remains to be seen. However, one storyline that might materialize is that Season 4 will see Mark face off with the Devil. This comes after Damien Darkblood (Clancy Brown) goes underground to speak to a mysterious Demon, voiced by Bruce Campbell. This demon has been speculated to be Satan, but nothing has been confirmed yet.
All episodes of Invincible are now streaming. Season 4 of Invincible hasn’t been given an exact release date yet. However, fans are expecting it to drop sometime in 2026. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates and coverage of the series and watch Invincible on Prime Video.
