Netflix has released its latest animated feature, KPop Demon Hunters – a supernatural action-packed musical produced by Sony Pictures Animation – and it wasn’t long before fans and critics shared their thoughts. Just like how the Kpop genre in the real world has wowed the hearts of many, so did this feature, as seen in its impressively high Rotten Tomatoes score.
KPop Demon Hunters features a high caliber of talent in all aspects of the film’s production. Since its release, it has generated a high critics’ score of 94% and an average audience score of 96% on Rotten Tomatoes. Collider praised the movie for the cast’s performance and animation, highlighting how some parts of the lore remained unexplored. This sentiment is reflected by fans and other critics, with some stating that the backstory and world-building could have been explored more. Regardless, many praised it, and time will tell if it lands on Netflix’s Tudum streaming charts. As of writing, FlixPatrol reported that it landed at number 1 on Netflix’s Top Movies on June 21, 2025, worldwide.
In addition to its streaming success, the soundtrack for KPop Demon Hunters was praised by fans, with some finding similarities to other popular K-pop songs. According to Netflix, it enlisted the help of multiple music producers who have worked with big-name K-pop artists, including BLACKPINK and BTS. During the weekend, these songs generated thousands of streams on Spotify, with “TAKEDOWN” (performed by TWICE) currently sitting at over 300,000 streams.
What Is ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ About?
KPop Demon Hunters is a film based on a story by co-director Maggie Kang, a Dreamworks storyboard artist who has worked on films such as Minions: The Rise of Gru. Kang draws elements of South Korean mythology and culture to tell a vibrant, action-packed story. The film follows Huntrix, a K-pop group made up of artists Rumi (Arden Cho), Mira (May Hong), and Zoey (Ji-young Yoo).
The three singers are not only talented performers but also a new generation of demon hunters. They can physically fight demons, and have singing voices with the power to maintain a seal called the Honmoon. In an attempt to break the Honmoon and feed human souls to demon king Gwi-Ma (Byung-hun Lee), a demon named Jinu (Ahn Hyo-shop) forms a boy band called Saja Boys. They plan to compete with Huntrix and use their fans to weaken the Honmoon.
