Impossible — The Final Reckoning’ Overtakes Henry Cavill’s Controversial $258 Million Gritty Comic Book Hit

After a rather underwhelming theatrical run, Paramount’s Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is looking forward to passing what could be its final box office milestone: the $600 million mark. While this would’ve been a terrific result in different circumstances, the issue of The Final Reckoning‘s reported budget of $400 million makes it undeniably disappointing. The movie needed to gross at least $200 million more, and that, too, just to break even. But it seems like audiences have run out of patience for director Christopher McQuarrie‘s elaborately designed take on the action franchise, after a sudden pivot with these last two films.

The Final Reckoning was sold as the last installment of the franchise. But there hasn’t been any official word on this yet, leading many to believe that this was simply a marketing plot to boost awareness. Regardless, the film’s inflated costs left little room for error for the studio, and everybody involved. The Final Reckoning recently passed its predecessor, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, at the global box office. But it will most probably fall short of Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, and Mission: Impossible – Fallout. It has, however, overtaken Fallout cast member Henry Cavill‘s career-making superhero film at the international box office.

Released in 2013, Man of Steel served as a reboot of the Superman franchise, and was directed by Zack Snyder as a tonal follow-up to Christopher Nolan‘s massively successful The Dark Knight trilogy. Man of Steel proved to be controversial for Snyder’s dour depiction of the character, and earned mixed reviews. Produced on a budget that has been reported to be as high as $258 million, the movie made over $665 million worldwide, of which $376 million came from overseas markets. The Final Reckoning‘s international haul now stands at $378 million.

‘The Final Reckoning’ Divided Audiences

The movie opened to divisive reviews as well, and was certainly not as beloved as Fallout, which holds a 98% Rotten Tomatoes score. The Final Reckoning, on the other hand, is currently sitting at an 80% score on the aggregator website, where the critics’ consensus reads, “Gargantuan in action, runtime, and scope, The Final Reckoning is a sentimental sendoff for Ethan Hunt that accomplishes its mission with a characteristic flair for the impossible.” Superman is set to be rebooted yet again, with James Gunn‘s movie around the corner. You can watch The Final Reckoning in theaters, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
