Horror Icon, 60, Explains the Scream Franchise’s Longevity

For those who have been worried or at least wondering if Scream will come to a screeching halt following the upcoming Scream 7, a recent statement from its creator, Kevin Williamson, leads us to believe it will go on and on — as long as the studio gives it the okay. While an eighth installment hasn’t been confirmed, Williamson shared his belief with the New York Post that the franchise has immense staying power no matter who stays or who goes, revealing,

“The thing about Scream is it can live in any form. And you can return to a character like Sidney and Gale and tell that story, and then the next one can be about someone else. I really like the idea that ‘Scream’ has evolved into a franchise that can expand in those ways.”

Cases in point can be found in the last two films, 2022’s Scream and 2023’s Scream VI. The fifth movie took the spotlight off Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott and turned it toward two new targets: Melissa Barrera’s Sam and Jenna Ortega’s Tara. Both movies still featured supporting performances by a mix of legacy characters, but the primary story was written around the two sisters and their friends. The fifth and sixth installments performed well at the box office, allowing the seventh to receive the greenlight.
