After Hightown ended abruptly on Starz, its creator, Rebecca Cutter, was set to continue her relationship with the network with a new show, The Hunting Wives. It has been in development since 2023, but after production wrapped up, there was no news. Deadline reports that The Hunting Wives is now moving from Starz to Netflix and will premiere in the US on July 21. The decision was informed by Starz’s ongoing decoupling process from Lionsgate Television, with whom they had partnered as their production studio. Starz has been on a quest to become profitable, like many other networks, and part of that process includes creating its own shows instead of licensing them from a production company. Lionsgate Television believed that The Hunting Wives would run longer if it were on another streaming platform, contrary to what Starz had initially planned.
Netflix has acquired a one-year license for the US, with Lionsgate TV planning to sell the rights to other international markets for a global audience. If the show is a major success, Netflix might order more seasons, as they’ve done in the past, but that’s not part of the current plan. The Hunting Wives is adapted from May Cobb‘s novel of the same name. It follows Sophie, who moves from the East Coast to deep East Texas with her family. There she finds a new order and is charmed by socialite Margo Banks. As she falls deeper into this world, obsession, seduction, and murder arise and threaten to destroy her life. The Hunting Wives stars Malin AĚŠkerman (Sophie) and Brittany Snow (Margo). Other cast members include Dermot Mulroney and Chrissy Metz.
Who Is Behind ‘The Hunting Wives?’
The series is created, written, and run by Cutter, who serves as an executive producer with Erwin Stoff and Cobb. Cutter is best known for being the brain behind the Monica Raymund-led crime drama Hightown, which aired on Starz for three seasons. The show follows Jackie Quinones (Raymund), a hard-partying fisheries service agent. A recurring drug user, Jackie finds herself embroiled in the drug-filled culture of Cape Cod after stumbling on a dead body. The show also starred Riley Voelkel, Shane Harper, and Atkins Estimond. The first season of Hightown has an 80% rating on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.
Watch The Hunting Wives when the show debuts in the US on July 21. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates about its availability in other territories. All seasons of Hightown are available to stream on Starz.
