Forget SydCarmy — This Potential Romance on ‘The Bear’ Could Save the Restaurant in Season 5

Love doesn’t come easy to those on The Bear. Whether it’s Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto (Jeremy Allen White) messing things up with his one-time love, Claire (Molly Gordon), or Richie (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) trying to move on from his divorce from Tiffany (Gillian Jacobs), there aren’t a lot of characters who have been all that successful in the romance department. Truly, the only couple right now who seem to be happy are Natalie “Sugar” Berzatto (Abby Elliott) and Pete (Chris Witaske) — but that doesn’t mean that we don’t have hope for at least one romantic match to work out in the kitchen next season.

Syd and Carmy Would Make a Horrible Couple on ‘The Bear’

Since Season 1 of The Bear, which premiered in 2022, many fans have been clamoring for Carmy and his co-worker, Sydney (Ayo Edebiri), to become a couple. It makes sense that SydCarmy is on people’s minds — the two chefs seem to be kindred spirits who are both incredibly talented and ambitious. They both want The Bear to be the biggest success possible, and their perfectionism (and cases of impostor syndrome) often leads them to push people away.

However, there are way more reasons why Syd and Carmy should actually never try to date. They’re too similar in a lot of ways, which could lead to even more fights than the ones they’re having now. Getting romantically involved would also wreck what they’re trying to build at The Bear, because they’re both at the top of the food chain there. Plus, the chemistry between the two pretty much lends itself more to a sibling bond than a romantic one. There’s no doubt that Syd and Carmy have a strong connection, but it would be a disaster if they ever decided to start dating. Luckily, there is someone else at The Bear that Syd could actually be happy with.

‘The Bear’ Season 4 Review: I Can’t Believe I’m Saying This, but the Show Should End Here

Please, don’t do any more.

‘The Bear’ Has Already Confirmed That Syd and Luca Have Chemistry

Viewers were introduced to Chef Luca (Will Poulter) in Season 2, when Marcus (Lionel Boyce) heads to Copenhagen. Marcus trains as a pastry chef under the supremely talented Luca and is given the confidence he needs to actually learn and grow as a chef. So much of the success that Marcus has in Season 4 can be traced to Luca’s patience and guidance back in Denmark. We’ve also learned that Luca honed his own skills while working next to Carmy years ago. He learned that even though he was confident in his own strengths, Carmy was an even more gifted chef, allowing him to understand that there would always be someone better than he is. He used this concept to help him focus on his own unique gifts and creativity, but it’s clear that Luca is still always there to encourage other chefs (like Marcus) throughout his career.

Syd and Luca first meet at the “funeral” for the restaurant, Ever, in the Season 3 finale. The immediate chemistry between the two is palpable, and their fun, flirty banter shows off a more easygoing side to their characters. The episode also illustrates the awkwardness that the two characters sometimes display. Luca rambles on and on about the impressive dishes of chef Grant Achatz, and then gets pretty hard on himself for nerding out after Achatz walks away. It’s sweet to see that these two share a sometimes over-the-top passion for food, which can sometimes result in them acting less than cool around other chefs.

A Syd and Luca Romance Could Take ‘The Bear’ To Another Level

When Season 4 picks up, it seems like Syd will clearly be resigned to the single life — but then Luca pops up to save the day at The Bear. Sugar has placed a hiring freeze to help with the bottom line, so Luca is brought in to stage at the restaurant. This act of kindness helps pull Marcus out of the weeds on prep and results in everyone in the kitchen feeling a little more confident (plus, they don’t have to worry about paying him a salary in this unpaid role). The best part of Luca staging at The Bear is that it gives him an opportunity to interact with Syd again. They have an incredibly cute flirtation, where she teases him about his adorable British accent (including how he says the word “chives”). There is a nice rhythm to their banter, and there’s an obvious sense of respect that flows between the two of them.

Syd and Luca would make the perfect couple because they’re some of the kindest people on the whole show. They’re supportive of their co-workers, and they’re able to easily show off their empathy towards their family and friends. For example, Luca has come to Chicago to work on his bond with his sister, and Syd devotes a lot of time to caring for her father after his heart attack. When it comes to their work in the kitchen, Syd is always there with an encouraging word to the staff, and Luca kindly orchestrates a test for Tina (Liza Colón-Zayas), where she can beat her time preparing pasta without getting in her own head. Both of these chefs achieve their goals without causing anyone else pain or stress (which is very unlike how Carmy operates). They also both have a sense of humor that makes their interactions feel fun and lighthearted, which is completely necessary in the restaurant’s otherwise tense atmosphere. Syd and Luca seem to have an ease to their connection; everything is so complicated at The Bear, so it’s nice to see a relationship that just works without a lot of effort.

The Bear has officially been picked up for a Season 5, and that’s a good thing since the Season 4 finale left us with a lot of questions. Is Carmy actually leaving the restaurant? If he does, how will The Bear run without Carmy at the helm? If Carmy does indeed depart, it’s clear Luca would be the perfect person to step up in his place. Running the restaurant with Syd would give him more time to spend with her, which would also be a great setup for them to develop into something more than just friends. The Bear isn’t always the greatest at showcasing healthy relationships, but Syd and Luca would be an easy couple to root for.

Seasons 1-4 of The Bear are available to stream on Hulu in the U.S.
