Following the Movie’s Success, Netflix’s ‘Minecraft’ Gets Creative With ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ and ‘Ms. Marvel’ Writers

Last year, Netflix announced it was teaming up with Mojang to create a Minecraft animated series. While updates for this project remained silent, perhaps due to the primary focus on A Minecraft Movie, an update was announced during this year’s Annecy Animation Film Festival. Not only is this Minecraft series moving forward, but it has also found a team of writers. One of them worked on the Marvel anthology series What If…?

According to Netflix’s Director of Content Acquisition – Kids, Dominique Bazay, spoke at the Netflix Series Animation: Get Ready for What’s Next! Presentation, revealing the creative team involved in the new Minecraft project. Leading this project and listed as showrunners are Kevin Adams and Joe Ksander, who previously worked on the 2019 Netflix animated film Next Gen and TMNT: We Strike Hard and Fade Away Into the Night. Also joining the writing team is What If…? writer A.C. Bradley, who also worked on Ms. Marvel and Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia by Guillermo del Toro. In addition to this announcement, it was revealed that the Australian animation company Flying Bark will be animating the series. This studio previously worked on What If…?, Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and LEGO Monkie Kid and is currently involved in the upcoming Avatar: The Last Airbender movie and the Ghostbusters animated series.

Bazay commented on this Minecraft series update, stating that they want to create something that will delight long-time fans and newcomers and that those working on the show are fans of the game.

“We’re very excited to bring an animated series in the Minecraft world to Netflix. We’re deep in collaboration with our friends at Mojang Studios, the creators of Minecraft, on the development of a brand-new animated series. The love for this game is undeniable, as you’ve seen in the last few months. There are fans of all ages, and I’m very proud that our creative team on this show are huge fans as well. They play the game all the time and have really developed a love for the self-expression it inspires. Obviously, they want to make something authentic and familiar to Minecraft, but also create a universe that is a new experience for fans. We want to delight those long-time fans, but we want new fans also to come in through this series.”

‘A Minecraft Movie’ Was a Smash-Hit at the Box Office

After A Minecraft Movie entered theaters on April 4, 2025, the live-action adaptation of the popular sandbox game became a box office hit. It generated almost $1 billion at the global box office and is the second-highest-grossing film of 2025, behind Ne Zha 2. Its success can also be attributed to the viral Chicken Jockey meme, in which fans would recite viral lines in theaters.

This movie broke a handful of records, becoming the “Second-Biggest Video Game Adaptation of All Time,” just behind The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Thanks to its success, a sequel has been confirmed, but the details have yet to be revealed.

The Netflix Minecraft series has yet to announce a release date. In the meantime, A Minecraft Movie will be available on HBO Max on June 20, 2025. Follow Collider to keep up with the latest updates.
