Although Final Destination Bloodlines has completed over a month of release in theaters worldwide, and has now been made available on home video, the movie is continuing to generate revenue at the box office. It’s already among the highest-grossing horror movies of all time, but will conclude its theatrical run with under $300 million globally. That being said, Bloodlines overtook a massively popular scary movie at the global box office this weekend, as it continued to lose theaters in the face of heavy competition. With $280 million globally, Bloodlines has overtaken the lifetime worldwide haul of director M. Night Shyamalan’s Split.
Released in 2016, the movie essentially saved his spiraling career after he regained some lost pride with the movie The Visit, a year earlier. Split was produced on a reported budget of just $9 million, which Shyamalan put up himself. Released by Universal, the movie was headlined by James McAvoy, who was acclaimed for his performance as a mass murderer with dissociative identity disorder (DID). This aspect of the film also attracted controversy, with mental health advocates criticizing the connection that the film was drawing between mental illness and criminal behavior. The movie gained further attention thanks to its surprise twist at the end, which revealed it to be a secret sequel to Shyamalan’s Unbreakable.
It spawned another sequel, titled Glass. Shyamalan has since moved to Warner Bros., the studio behind Bloodlines. This year, W.B. also released the blockbuster horror film Sinners, which has grossed over $360 million globally. Bloodlines is currently among the 20 highest-grossing horror movies in global box office history. It opened to excellent reviews, and appears to have settled at a 92% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie successfully managed to appeal to a younger generation, in addition to the millennials who grew up on the franchise.
‘Bloodlines’ Gave Way to ’28 Years Later’
The same phenomenon is unfolding this weekend with 28 Years Later, the long-overdue sequel to 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later. Directed by Danny Boyle and written by Alex Garland, 28 Years Later debuted in second place at the domestic box office, exceeding expectations. But it couldn’t match Bloodlines’ opening weekend performance. Produced on a reported budget of $50 million, Bloodlines is headlined by Kaitlyn Santa Juana and directed by Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein.
