Fans Divided Over 28 Years Later Ending, Reference Power Rangers

The ending of the newly released 28 Years Later has left the internet divided — to say the least.

The post-apocalyptic horror flick, released on June 20, delivered the shrill factor with its action sequences and terrifyingly gory zombie scenes. But it was the movie’s unpredictable and campy conclusion that left everyone talking.

The film ends with Spike (Alfie Williams) in harm’s way as a horde of infected approaches. Just when it seems like Spike’s fate is sealed, a group of people dressed in colorful tracksuits appear and rescue him. The group’s leader, Sir Jimmy Crystal (Jack O’Connell) asks Spike to join them after taking out zombies with kung-fu moves that many people are comparing to the Power Rangers.

We have to give credit where credit’s due — Amazon Prime Video has really improved its sci-fi movie options in June. While Prime Video recently lost Super 8, Passengers and The Andromeda Strain, it’s also picked up Oblivion, one of the best sci-fi action movies in the last two decades that just happens to star […]

Some viewers pointed out that Spike had a Power Rangers action figure at the start of the film that he chose to leave behind, arguing that the ending scene is simply a possible callback to that moment. Others deemed the Power Rangers-esque fight sequence to be rather outrageous amid the chaos ensuing elsewhere in the film.

“The ending of 28 Years Later was crazy where Df the power rangers came from,” one person wrote on X on Monday, June 23.

“Just watched 28 Years Later. Great movie mostly. There were surprisingly emotional moments. But that ending, holy crap. I didn’t expect a cameo from the power rangers,” a second person said on X.

“I enjoyed 28 Years Later, especially the coming of age elements, but I swear some of the choices in that movie are just baffling and that ending straight up does feel like an episode from Power Rangers. The sequel definitely needs to explain some of this stuff. #28YearsLater,” a third person noted.

28 Years Later had an operation overdrive action figure in a scene even though that season of power rangers came out in 2007. Literally unwatchable,” another person wrote on X.

Another pointed out, “For those of us saying the ending of 28 YEARS LATER felt a little like Power Rangers. It was literally under our noses the entire time!! Spike had some sort of Power Ranger toy that he was gonna take with him and his dad, but decided to leave it at home!”

This year has already delivered some incredible films — but no season does a blockbuster quite like summer. From Tom Cruise’s latest — and potentially final — addition to the Mission: Impossible franchise to Celine’s Song’s highly anticipated romantic comedy Materialists, all genres are ripe for the picking for theatergoers as temperatures continue to rise. […]

Director Danny Boyle weighed in on the decision to include the arguably bizarre fight sequence at the end of the film.

“[The ending] is about reintroducing evil into what has been a compassionate environment,” he told The Independent on June 21. “I asked [writer Alex Garland] right at the beginning [of the writing process] to tell me the nature of each of the films. He said that the first film is about the nature of family. The second film is about the nature of evil.”

As many continue to debate whether the ending of the film fits the apocalypse narrative, others are looking forward to seeing how Jimmy and Spike’s stories continue to unfold in the upcoming sequel, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. The film will mark the fourth installment in the franchise and will be released on January 16, 2026.
