Ezra Miller is getting candid about the series of highly publicized scandals that plagued their career.
The Flash actor, who uses they/them pronouns, first made headlines in 2020 when footage of them appearing to choke a woman at a bar in Iceland surfaced on social media. In 2022, Miller faced a series of arrests on charges ranging from second-degree assault, disorderly conduct, harassment and more. The actor pleaded no contest to the disorderly conduct charge and was fined $500, while the harassment charge was dismissed. (It’s not clear what became of the assault charge.)
In August that year, Miller, 32, said they had “recently gone through a time of intense crisis” and begun treatment to deal with “complex mental health issues.”
After nearly three years out of the spotlight, the actor surprised fans when they were spotted at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2025, walking the red carpet at the premiere of Die My Love.
In a new interview published on Thursday, June 19, Miller said that they were there to support the film’s director, Lynne Ramsay, who previously directed Miller in We Need to Talk About Kevin and whom they described as “one of my closest friends in the world.”
“I’m working with her again,” Miller told Italian outlet Lo Speciale Giornale. “That will likely be the first thing I do … a film that [she] and I are writing together. I’ve been writing a lot because you can do that in solitude, which has been friendly to me.”
The Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them actor also touched on their time away from the spotlight amid their personal issues, noting that their return to acting is on “tentative grounds.”
Miller said, “When you work in this industry, you will find yourself in deep, deep relation to people who do not give a single f*** about you or your well-being at all. Not that I don’t hold a lot of remorse and lamentation for a lot of things I did and a lot of things that happened in that time.”
“But I’m really, really grateful for the lessons that came with that abyss,” they added.
Back in May, Ramsay confirmed that she was working with Miller again in an interview with The Los Angeles Times.
“I’m making a vampire movie. I can’t tell you much. It’s with Ezra Miller, who was in Kevin. He’s the main character. That’s in development,” the filmmaker said.
