Check out our selections from Netflix, Disney+ and Amazon Prime Video.
‘Arcane: League of Legends’ (2021-2024)
If The Last of Us convinced you that television shows based on video games can be truly great, you’ll probably be even more impressed by this animated series inspired by the online roleplaying game League of Legends. Arcane follows two sisters, Vi (Hailee Steinfeld) and Powder (Ella Purnell), growing up in the underground city of Zaun, whose citizens live in poverty compared to their glittering aboveground neighbors in Piltover. When Zaun begins to seek its independence, magic and technology collide in a violent war for supremacy.
Arcane features stunning artwork, impressive character development and genuinely heartbreaking twists, although some of the plot threads in the final season fail to reach a satisfying resolution. Riot Games, Fortiche Studios and Netflix have said that there are more shows coming in the “League of Legends” universe, so maybe we’ll just have to wait and see how they pay off later.
Arcane is definitely worth adding to your list — Steinfeld’s vocal performance as Vi is some of her best work, and she’s one of many talented actors lending their voices to this fantastical universe.

‘Jury Duty’ (2023)
Originally created for Freevee and moved to Amazon Prime Video when Freevee folded, Jury Duty is as zany and haphazard as its origin story — and we mean that in the most complimentary way.
This reality show hoax follows Ronald Gladden, a young man who is summoned for jury duty in Highland Park, Los Angeles. Ronald has no idea, however, that everyone else at the courthouse is an actor. The cast, which includes James Marsden as an exaggerated version of himself and Mekki Leeper (The Sex Lives of College Girls) as a nerdy and religious juror, constantly places Ronald in ridiculous situations after the jury is sequestered.
Ronald is a truly delightful personality to watch, and his reactions to the insanity are effortlessly entertaining.

‘Jessica Jones’ (2015-2019)
Before Captain Marvel or Black Widow existed as solo movies, an older iteration of Marvel (remember the Marvel Netflix era?) released a dark, feminist female superhero masterpiece called Jessica Jones. Based on a little-known character, this noir detective story stars Krysten Ritter (Breaking Bad, Don’t Trust the B—- In Apartment 23) as a super-strong, super-emotionally damaged private investigator. Recovering after a traumatic experience with the sinister Kilgrave (David Tennant in a terrifying and layered performance), Jessica is shocked and horrified when she realizes the case she’s investigating appears to involve the disturbingly powerful villain. Kilgrave can make anyone he speaks to do exactly as he says — a power whose horrific implications are explored to the fullest in this series about trauma and resilience.
Season 1 of Jessica Jones is, in our opinion, a perfect season of television, and while the subsequent seasons decline slightly in quality, it’s absolutely worth your time. Plus, Jessica is slated to appear in the next season of Daredevil: Born Again, so now’s the time to prepare for this continued merging of Netflix’s Marvel and the MCU.
