David Corenswet Opened Up About Christopher Reeve’s Son: ‘He’s the Superman type’

Superman is finally flying into theaters this summer, and David Corenswet is taking on the iconic hero. Corenswet is joining a long line of actors to play Clark Kent/Superman in the live-action world, and James Gunn‘s Superman has an important cameo for fans: Will Reeve. Reeve, who is an actor and an ABC correspondent, is the son of the late actor Christopher Reeve, who played the role in Superman: The Movie in 1978, directed by Richard Donner. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Corenswet spoke about the late actor’s son and getting to work with him on the new film.

“Will is great,” Corenswet told the publication. “He is the Superman type for obvious reasons. He’s tall, he’s handsome, and he’s got a great smile. Having him show up and give his support in that moment was very heartwarming. He also got to meet my kid when she was only a few months old. She happened to be on set that day, too. I don’t think she’ll remember it, but that was a nice little thing, as well, a little parallel.”

Outside his cameo, Reeve reportedly watched them filming some of the scenes for the film as well. “We were shooting a big climactic scene. He visited and watched us shoot a little bit,” Corenswet said, going on to talk about how everyone was excited to be on set. “It was nice in a lot of different ways. It was nice in the same way when we had all of the [DC] comic writers and artists visit set. They were all wearing their Superman T-shirts and they were all excited to be there. Anybody who’s involved with a great character, whether it’s directly as writing and drawing for them — or, in Will’s case, his dad put the character into the public consciousness — when those people are excited about what they see, that just gives you a little fuel to keep going.”

‘Superman’ Continues the Legacy of Christopher Reeve

Reeve has been our Superman for decades. Whether an actor came before or after almost didn’t matter because Reeve was the first to make audiences believe that a man could fly. It was a beautiful thing to see in the Donner film, and it is nice that Gunn and the company behind Superman recognize the legacy of Reeve’s work enough to include his son in the film. It shows audiences that they know the importance of this character, the people who brought him to life, and what it means to really be Superman for a new generation.

You can see Reeve and Corenswet in the new Superman movie, releasing on July 11, 2025.
