‘Dan Da Dan’ Co-Director Reveals Which Season 2 Episode Is His Favorite

There are many things that DanDaDan fans want to see when the series returns for Season 2 later this week. First and foremost, they want to see Okarun (voiced by Natsuki Hanae in the original Japanese and by A.J. Beckles in the English dub), Momo (Shion Wakayama/Abby Trott) and Turbo Granny (Mayumi Tanaka/Barbara Goodson) again. Then, they want to find out what happened after the boy and the girl agreed to visit Jiji’s (Kaito Ishikawa/Aleks Le) house to find out what’s going on in the eerie place. Once episodes start rolling out, everyone will have their favorite moments, but series’ co-director Abel Gongora has already revealed to Collider which episode of the season is his favorite.

During the interview, Gongora told Collider’s Laura Adams that his favorite episode comes fairly early in the season: it’s Episode 2, whose title is yet to be revealed. We do know, however, that this is the episode in which strange events that defy physics start taking place inside of Jiji’s house. The trailer of Season 2 has already revealed that there’s a whole city inside the house and that it isn’t structured like you’d expect — it’s designed to be confusing and claustrophobic. The director explained what makes it his favorite:

“I really like the background with the houses and how it’s built. This tower of houses and everything looks very cool and a little bit illogical, because the houses aren’t horizontal; they’re at every angle possible. And then having Jiji struggling and going down the stairs, Momo is also following… I thought, ‘That’s really cool.’”

Of course, Episode 2 is just the beginning of the season, and a lot more is going to happen with Okarun, Jiji and Momo as the season develops. The first arc, however, has the potential of being one of the best in the entire anime series. In it, Okarun, Momo and Turbo Granny meet the Avatar of Hatred, an evil entity that is able to bring about the darkest thoughts of its victims in order to stop them from fighting. He’s the first big challenge of the season, which might mean that things will only escalate from there.

DanDaDan is based on a wildly popular manga series created by Yukinobu Tatsu — who actively participates in the process of adaptation from the manga to anime series, as Gongora also revealed. Before Season 2 premiered, the compilation movie DanDaDan: Evil Eye premiered in theaters, and it has already raked in over $6.5 million worldwide, establishing a new record for the franchise in terms of popularity. The movie exhibits the first three episodes of Season 2 as if they were a feature film.

Season 2 of DanDaDan debuts this Thursday, July 3. You can stream the series on Netflix, Crunchyroll or Hulu.
