Christian Bale hasn’t been seen in live-action since 2022’s The Pale Blue Eye, the mystery thriller streaming on Netflix, but one of the star’s older and more controversial projects has stumbled into a run of streaming success. Bale stars alongside Joel Edgerton (Dark Matter) and Sigourney Weaver (Avatar) in Exodus: Gods and Kings, the 2014 historical epic following Moses, the defiant leader who rises against Pharaoh Ramses II to help six hundred thousand slaves escape Egypt. Exodus: Gods and Kings is streaming on Rakuten TV globally, where it’s one of the most popular movies in several countries such as Iceland and Azerbaijan. The film was panned by critics and audiences, earning scores of 29% and 35% on Rotten Tomatoes, and it grossed $268 million at the box office against a hefty $140 million budget.
Exodus: Gods and Kings is, unfortunately, not streaming in America, but the film can be rented on Prime Video for the low price of $3.79. To prepare to play Moses in Exodus: Gods and Kings, Christian Bale read the first five books of the Bible and even dipped into the Quran. The film was directed by Ridley Scott, who once told Access Hollywood that the final cut was over four hours before being trimmed down to two and a half hours. Scott dedicated the film to his late brother, who took his own life in 2012. Exodus: Gods and Kings came just before Scott helmed one of the most iconic movies in his career, The Martian. The space epic starring Matt Damon is currently streaming on HBO Max. Scott most recently returned to the arena when he directed Gladiator II, the legacy sequel to the Russell Crowe-led Oscar-winner.
