Chris Pine will always be known for his roles in the Star Trek and Wonder Woman franchises, but 16 years ago, he starred in a sci-fi horror thriller that’s infecting a new streamer’s top 10. Pine stars alongside Emily VanCamp (Captain America: The Winter Soldier) and Christopher Meloni (Law & Order: SVU) in Carriers, the 2009 film following four friends who seek haven after a lethal virus spreads globally, leaving dangerous infected and humans all over the world. Carriers is currently streaming on Paramount+, and it’s one of the most popular movies on the platform in America, sitting at #9 at the time of writing. The film earned a 62% score from critics and a 39% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes after grossing only $5 million at the box office.

The streaming success of Carriers all these years later can likely be attributed to the recent release of 28 Years Later, the legacy sequel to 28 Days Later, the iconic horror film starring Cillian Murphy. Critics and fans mostly agree that 28 Years Later is a worthy follow-up to the original film, which has left viewers eager to check out more films in the same genre. There are plenty of classic zombie hits on various streaming services, but movies based on infected that more closely resemble the behavior of more aggressive humans are less common. Carriers may not have found the same success as 28 Days Later, but the film is still remembered all these years later. Álex and David Pastor wrote and directed Carriers, and they also returned to the post-apocalyptic world recently to write and direct Bird Box: Barcelona, the Netflix spin-off film.
