Channing Tatum’s Rom-Com Classic Roger Ebert “Didn’t for One Second Believe” is a Streaming Hit Nearly 20 Years Later

Almost two decades ago, a cult rom-com classic was born. Starring Amanda Bynes, just three years after she burst onto the rom-com scene in What a Girl Wants opposite Colin Firth, the brilliant She’s the Man sees the former child star team up with a young Channing Tatum to deliver a modern reimagining of the Shakespeare play, The Twelfth Night that has aged like a fine wine.

The movie was perhaps not as appreciated as it should’ve been at the time of its debut, exemplified by a poor 44% critics’ rating on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, although famed critic Roger Ebert did give it an impressive 3 stars out of 4, despite admitting he “didn’t for one second believe the plot” of the movie. Nevertheless, today, it is considered one of the best of its kind from the genre’s golden era, which is reflected in the audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, which almost doubles the critics’ take with a strong 79% from over 250,000 reviews.

As of June 30, 2025, She’s the Man has officially joined the top 10 most-streamed movies on Paramount+ in the US. Entering the list at #10, the rom-com more than deserves its flowers, although it can’t quite outperform nine other titles currently streaming on the platform. This includes, at #9, another noughties rom-com in Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey‘s How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, with the chick-flick classic Mean Girls at #8. Tom Cruise‘s penultimate outing as Ethan Hunt, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, is at #7, with Eddie Murphy‘s disastrous Norbit at #6, and The Nice Guys at #5. Jared Hess‘ critically panned Masterminds is at #4, with Top Gun: Maverick at #3, with Jason Bateman‘s Extract at #2, and Jack Quaid‘s hit 2025 action film Novocaine still holding the top spot.

How Did ‘She’s the Man’ Perform at the Box Office?

Unfavored by critics, She’s the Man would sadly not prove much more successful at the 2006 box office. Made on a reported budget of $25 million, the film only just doubled this investment, with a total global haul of $55.2 million split between a domestic total of $33.8 million and a further $21.4 million from overseas markets. The film managed an average per-theater run of just shy of five weeks, opening in less than 3,000 theaters nationwide on its way to becoming the 95th highest-grossing movie of the year on American soil.

She’s the Man is streaming now on Paramount+. Stay tuned to Collider for more streaming updates.
