It’s almost impossible to believe, but it’s been a quarter of a century since Cardcaptor Sakura Movie 2: The Sealed Card premiered. As a celebration of the movie’s 25th anniversary and the legacy of Cardcaptor Sakura, some new gorgeous art by CLAMP was unveiled as the Japanese fans prepare for the movie’s re-release in theaters. So far, a similar theatrical run hasn’t been announced for U.S. audiences.
Fans of the Cardcaptor Sakura anime and manga series know full well that the protagonist Sakura Kinomoto (voiced by Sakura Tange in the original Japanese and by Carly McKillip in the English dub) delivered looks on every single episode, thanks to her best friend and crush Tomoyo Daidouji (Thanh Hong/Junko Iwao). The celebration art reveals some of those looks, with ribbons and flowers galore. The art also features her guardian and friend Kerberos (Aya Hisakawa/Matt Hill). In Japan, moviegoers will get to take the different sets of artwork home.
In case you didn’t watch it or do not remember, Cardcaptor Sakura Movie 2: The Sealed Card is considered the true ending of the anime series. In the story, Sakura is finally preparing to capture the very last of the 53 cards that escaped the book that bound them. The movie was directed by Morio Asaka (Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End) and written by Nanase Okawa (xxxHolic).
Where Can I Watch ‘Cardcaptor Sakura’?
While Cardcaptor Sakura isn’t celebrated in theaters on this side of the world, we can still revisit the anime series and movies on Crunchyroll and remember all the things that made us fall in love with the story in the first place. Sakura is the kind of protagonist that is increasingly rare to see: genuinely kind, welcoming to everyone who seeks her help and even naive at times — but this is never perceived as a problem or a flaw. So, chances are that you will discover new things as you gear up to revisit the world of the Clow Cards, or unveil it for the first time.
Since the franchise recently came back with the revival series Carcaptor Sakura: Clear Card Arc, it’s not likely that the show goes anywhere from that point — unless of course, if the CLAMP artists decide to make Sakura a little older again. In Carcaptor Sakura: Clear Card Arc, the title character is in junior high and finally dating Syaoran Li (TK). She gets shocked when events similar to what happened when she was in elementary school star taking place, and gets desperate when all her cards that she battled to capture all turn blank.
You can stream Cardcaptor Sakura on Crunchyroll.
