Joseph Kosinski‘s F1 has sped ahead of the competition as its box office race begins, earning a huge $57 million in the US alone on its opening weekend. This has helped F1 take pole position in the current box office rankings during a time of stiff competition, including from the likes of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, Universal’s How to Train Your Dragon remake, Danny Boyle and Alex Garland‘s 28 Years Later, Disney’s long-awaited live-action Lilo & Stitch remake, and much more.
Currently, after just four days, F1 has earned a global haul of $153.2 million, split between a domestic total of $63.9 million and a further $89.3 million from overseas markets. This has already placed the movie as the 13th highest-grossing film of the year so far, and helped Brad Pitt, who stars alongside Damson Idris and Javier Bardem, take his all-time global total past the $9 billion mark. In doing so, F1 has already shot past an Oscar-winning drama starring Pitt’s 2007 three-quel Ocean’s Thirteen castmate, Al Pacino, at the domestic box office.
That film is Scent of a Woman, Pacino’s only Academy Award win to date despite nine total nominations. Playing a man without sight, Pacino took advice from a school for the blind to help him craft the character with detail, which helped in no small part towards both his Oscar win and the movie’s high praise. On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, Scent of a Woman holds a huge 82%, “certified fresh,” critics’ score, with an even better 92% for good measure. Taking just over $63 million from domestic venues alone, Scent of a Woman proved more successful beyond financial means, as can be seen by its quick disposal at the hands of F1.
‘F1’ Has Received Plenty of Praise
With reports of a sequel already in the works, it’s safe to say that Apple and co are pleased with F1‘s start to box office life. Boasting a “certified fresh” 83% score from critics and a “verified hot” 97% rating from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, fan approval is clear. So is the approval of critics, illustrated by Ross Bonaime‘s review of the movie for Collider, in which he awarded the movie a huge 8/10. “Between this and Top Gun: Maverick, Kosinski has shown he’s amazing at creating this sort of grandiose, big-budget crowdpleasers that feel massive in a way we rarely see anymore,” Bonaime wrote, adding, “This is the sort of film built for the summer: a loud, exciting movie that just feels expensive that’ll make you want to clap with excitement over even the most minuscule moments and high-five the stranger next to you in a packed theater.”
F1 is now playing in theaters. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates on the film.
