Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End became a massive hit following its release in 2023. The show’s first season spanned nearly 30 episodes and was nominated for 20 awards at the 2025 Crunchyroll Anime Awards, including “Anime of the Year.” However, as Season 2 prepares itself for its 2026 release date, shocking news has emerged as one of Frieren’s major voice actors has announced they’re limiting some of their activities due to health concerns, indicating a possible recast.
It was reported by Oricon News that Atsumi Tanezaki, the Japanese voice actress for Frieren in Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is prioritizing her recovery by reducing her workload. According to a statement from her agency, she will be limiting some of her activities, and they apologize “for the worry and inconvenience this may cause.” Additionally, Tanezaki released her own statement via X/Twitter, assuring fans that there’s no change regarding her work, and she’s just going to take it easy.
“As my agency announced, I’ll be focusing on recovering my health while limiting some of my activities for a while. I also plan to pause my X posts for the time being… though I may post something unexpectedly—sorry if that happens. My work itself hasn’t changed, so some people might wonder if I’m really taking it easy (thank you for your concern—please don’t worry too much). To continue cherishing the roles and works I’ve been fortunate to encounter, and to keep doing this job, however clumsily, I need to be in good health. So I will be taking proper care of myself! Osu!! As summer begins to show its true intensity, I hope everyone stays well and takes care too.”
Aside from Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, Tanezaki has starred in other notable projects. She voiced Anya Forger in Spy x Family, Mujika in The Promise Neverland Season 2, Arisa in the 2019 adaptation of Fruits Basket, Juno in Beastars, Roza in Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online, and most recently, Chloe in Once Upon a Witch’s Death.
What Do We Know About ‘Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End’ Season 2?

While it’s still unknown what’s next for Frieren and her party and Season 2’s episode count has yet to be decided, Season 1 of the anime has covered the first four-story arcs from the manga. So, it’s safe to assume that Season 2 will start at the beginning of the “Continued Northern Travels Arc” and “Divine Revolte Arc,” where Frieren’s Party can travel to the Northern Plateau thanks to Fern becoming a First-Class Mage, where they face new foes, and potentially make new allies.
