It’s hard to believe, but it’s already been over a decade since Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works took the world by storm. The anime series became the type of phenomenon that you had to be there to fully understand, and going back and rewatching makes a full set of emotions resurface in the hearts and minds of fans of the saga. Luckily for them, MVM is releasing the series on Blu-ray format, and you won’t have to wait too long for it: the special edition hits shelves on August 4.
It’s pretty easy to understand why Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works became so compelling: the story uses a battle royale system to follow a bunch of characters who fight alongside entities who are basically reincarnations of legendary historical figures like Gilgamesh, Medusa, and Cú Chulainn. They are all fighting the fifth Holy Grail War, which is a magical tournament where they fight to the death in order to win a magical chalice that will grant them any wish. Tournament-based anime series don’t get any cooler than that.
Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works will be released in two editions, but both will be released on the same day. Part 1 will feature the first 13 episodes of the series and Part 2 will carry episodes 14 to 25. MVM is yet to reveal which bonus features will be available in the blu-ray edition, as well as whether the alternative OVA ending will be included in this edition. However, just to be able to own the series forever — as we know that titles leave streaming constantly — is a huge win for fans.
Is ‘Fate/Stay Night’ Based On A Manga?
Fate/Stay Night is one of the few franchises that did the opposite of what normally happens with anime series. It was first released as a visual novel game, and it quickly became a standout title. It was then adapted into manga, anime, and animated movie formats. When it was adapted into manga format, the series was written by Datto Nishiwaki.
The animation studio responsible for bringing Fate/Stay Night to life is Ufotable, which in recent years became widely known for its top-notch style displayed in the hit anime series Demon Slayer. Before that, however, the studio was already praised for the visuals of Fate/Stay Night.
