Ryan Reynolds has become known for his role as Deadpool in the Fox X-Men universe and, more recently, in the MCU’s 2024 hit Deadpool & Wolverine. However, years before he ever suited up as the Merc with a Mouth, he starred in a critically panned film for another comic book studio. Reynolds suits up as Hal Jordan, aka the Green Lantern, in Green Lantern, the 2011 superhero film that also stars Blake Lively as Carol Ferris and Mark Strong as Sinestro.
The DCU is firmly in the hands of James Gunn now, who recently directed all three Guardians of the Galaxy movies for Marvel. Gunn has also worked on other projects like The Suicide Squad and its spin-off series, Peacemaker. During a recent interview on the DC Showcase Podcast, Gunn revealed that he got a congratulatory text from Ryan Reynolds when he got the CEO job at DC. Gunn thanks Reynolds before jokingly asking if he wanted to play Green Lantern again. Reynolds had two words to say back to this: “F*** off.”
Gunn also confirmed that he got a congratulatory text from Jason Momoa, one that only said “Lobo,” just with a lot more than two O’s. This proved to be a much more serious matter than Reynolds and Gunn’s playful Green Lantern banter, though — Jason Momoa will make his DCU debut as Lobo in Supergirl, coming to theaters next year. While it would be fun to see Reynolds come back as Green Lantern once more, his sights are likely set on Deadpool. Fans remain hopeful that he and his Deadpool & Wolverine co-star, Hugh Jackman, will have roles in Avengers: Doomsday.
Ryan Reynolds and Jason Momoa Are Teaming Up for a New Project
Reynolds and Momoa have also seemingly been texting each other, not just James Gunn. The duo is both attached to star in Animal Friends, the upcoming animated action comedy coming to theaters next year on May 1. Aubrey Plaza and Dan Levy also have voice roles in the film, which was written and directed by Peter Atencio. Reynolds has also confirmed that he’s working on another project with Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy and co-star Hugh Jackman, but details about it are being kept locked up tighter than a drum.
Ryan Reynolds will likely never play Green Lantern again. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates on the situation and watch Reynolds’ Green Lantern film on HBO Max.
