Since rising through Hollywood’s ranks as a child star in the likes of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Finding Neverland, and The Spiderwick Chronicles, Freddie Highmore has broken the curse that often surrounds successful child stars and broken into a triumphant acting career as an adult. Still only 33 years of age, although he still looks much younger, Highmore has dazzled and delighted in the likes of Bates Motel as the iconic Norman Bates, Spanish heist thriller The Vault, and most notably as Shaun Murphy in The Good Doctor, which officially ended last year.
Now, the London-born actor is returning to his British roots to join Bodyguard star Keeley Hawes in the upcoming crime thriller series The Assassin. Announced back in August 2024, the wait for more information about this tantalizing new Prime Video series has felt long, with that wait finally over thanks to Radio Times. Not only have first-look images (available below) of some of the supporting cast been released, but a release window for the show has finally been announced, with July 2025 the month you’ll need to mark down in your diaries.
Joining Highmore and Hawes in an enticing cast are the likes of Gina Gershon (Bound), Shalom Brune-Franklin (Baby Reindeer), Jack Davenport (Kingsman: The Secret Service), Alan Dale (Neighbours), Gerald Kyd (Doctor Who), Devon Terrell (Totally Completely Fine), Richard Dormer (Game of Thrones) and David Dencik (Chernobyl), many of whom can be seen in the pictures below. The series hails from the minds of The Tourist‘s Harry and Jack Williams, which also featured the aforementioned Brune-Franklin.
What is ‘The Assassin’ About?
Ever since Prime Video UK’s Head of TV, Hannah Blyth, promised “a high-stakes thriller with a dynamic mother-son relationship at its core,” potential viewers have been desperate for more crucial plot information before they dive into the dark conspiracy that awaits. Thankfully, that is also now available, with the synopsis beginning, “Secluded on a remote Greek island… [and] armed with questions around new information on his paternity, Edward battles to find the right time to speak to his frustratingly distant mother.” It continues, “But, when the moment finally presents itself, things take a deadly turn as Julie’s dangerous past catches up with her and they are forced to flee the island and go on the run together.” Finally, the synopsis concludes:
“Edward’s quest for truth clashes with Julie’s secrecy whilst they are forced to work together in a fight for survival, testing their dysfunctional relationship to its limits. Amid uncovering a dark conspiracy they believe to be their only threat, a greater danger emerges that will destroy their relationship entirely. In a race against time, Julie fights to save Edward and salvage their relationship as past and present collide in a showdown across the globe.”
The Assassin heads to Prime Video in July. You can stream Highmore’s The Good Doctor now on Hulu.
