Few actors have taken on as many iconic roles over the years as Jason Statham, but one of the star’s biggest box office bombs has resurfaced on streaming charts a few years after release. Statham stars alongside Megan Fox and 50 Cent in The Expendables 4, or Expend4bles, the action thriller currently streaming on Starz. Expend4bles had, at one point, spent over 200 days atop streaming charts before it left the top 10, but now it’s back for another bout, sitting at #7 at the time of writing. The Expendables 4 is widely regarded as the biggest financial misfire of Statham’s career — the film grossed only $37 million at the box office against a $100 million budget, falling over $150 million short of its break-even point. It earned scores of 14% from critics and 69% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.
Four different directors have come on board to helm each Expendables movie. The franchise started under the directorial wings of Sylvester Stallone, who also features in all four movies, albeit in a much smaller capacity in Expend4bles. He then passed off directorial duties to Simon West for the sequel, who also worked with Statham a few years later for Wild Card. Patrick Hughes stepped behind the camera to direct the threequel, which came shortly before he launched the Hitman’s Bodyguard action franchise, and Scott Waugh was brought on board to direct Expend4bles. Waugh is best known for directing Act of Valor (2012) and Need for Speed (2014), and he’ll team up with Reacher’s Alan Ritchson for Runner, an upcoming action film that recently wrapped filming.
