It’s been almost two months since Ghosts ended its fourth season with that lovely finale, “The Devil Went Down to Woodstone,” and fans certainly can’t wait for the show to return. Whenever that happens, since the comedy has been renewed for Seasons 5 and 6, viewers can expect more details about Sasappis’ (Román Zaragoza) death, as he is the only main spirit whose demise remains a mystery. That, of course, won’t be the only major storyline ahead, as TVLine may have confirmed one more, involving none other than Sass’ love interest, Joan (Taylor Ortega).
Ortega’s character debuted in Ghosts Season 4 as a screenwriter from the Golden Age of Hollywood and one of the first women to pursue that career. Unfortunately, she died during the 1940s with a flask of whiskey, which other ghosts can drink briefly before it returns to the flask. Pete (Richie Moriarty) introduced her to Sass as a new romantic partner and, like him, she has enough experience to roam for an extended period without anything going wrong.
In February 2025, Ghosts was renewed for two extra seasons, months before Season 4 wrapped up. And since that season ended, Joan’s ability to roam is one of the many things that left fans with questions. As expected, there is a story behind why she can do so, as co-showrunner Joe Port has teased:
“There may be a story behind that. I mean, you know Pete’s story — it’s because he was a travel agent and never went anywhere — so I guess we’ll learn more about Joan’s, yes.”
Sass Had An Amazing Time As A Romantic Lead in ‘Ghosts’ Season 4
The fourth season of America’s beloved sitcom can be described as significantly memorable for Sass, who got to finally have his first intimate experience. We can thank Joan for that! The season also saw Zaragoza play the romantic lead, a role he discussed with Collider’s Samantha Coley, confessing how much he had always wanted that. He said:
“This one is a little bit more of the A-plot, a little bit more fleshed out, and to have that was just so fun. I got to play all these different kinds of rom-com tropes and scenes that you would have seen in a rom-com. So, I was so grateful. It was so fun.”
Zaragoza also dished on his character’s relationship with Joan, praising Ortega for being such a great partner with whom he “became best buds right away.” “That’s something you always dream of,” the Ghosts actor added. “When you get a storyline like this or get an opportunity like this, you just hope the person that you get to act with and play with, you hope the chemistry is there on and off the screen.”
A premiere date hasn’t been announced for Ghosts Season 5. Stay tuned to Collider for further information about the show.
