Disney’s live-action Lilo & Stitch remake, in light of the announcement of a sequel getting the green light, continues to celebrate its enormous success by taking down yet another big-name rival at the box office. Following a sixth Monday in theaters, in which the film made $1.1 million from 2,900 total venues nationwide, Lilo & Stitch has moved up to #52 in the all-time domestic box office rankings, overtaking another Disney favorite on its way.
Officially, Lilo & Stitch has now earned just $200,000 more than the 2013 megahit, Frozen, which finished its domestic run on $400.9 million. Lilo & Stitch now boasts a domestic total of $401.1 million, although it can only top Frozen in the US alone, falling far short of the Idina Menzel-led family favorite when adding international figures. In total, Frozen is one of just a handful of movies to break the billion-dollar mark, accumulating just shy of $1.3 billion globally. Currently, Lilo & Stitch has earned $948 million worldwide, with the chance to hit the billion-dollar boundary looking slimmer by the day.
Nevertheless, a huge opportunity still remains in the live-action remake’s sights, namely entering the official top 50 highest-grossing movies in US box office history. Currently, just two films sit between Lilo & Stitch and glory: 2009’s Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen starring Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox, and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, which teamed up Jack Black with the likes of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Kevin Hart, and Karen Gillan. Just $3.4 million separates Lilo & Stitch and the #50 spot, a gap that the live-action movie should easily bridge come this weekend.
