Brad Garrett Squashes Any Hope of a ‘Everybody Loves Raymond’ Reboot

Everybody Loves Raymond is a beloved sitcom and one that many fans miss. But if you’re waiting for the show to make a return, you’d be wasting your time. Star Brad Garrett spoke with PEOPLE at the premiere of his new Pixar movie Elio when he was asked whether the show would have a reboot as other sitcoms have done recently. The original run of Everybody Loves Raymond began in 1996 and ran for six seasons, ending in 2005. According to Garrett, there will not be a reboot series, but it isn’t because no one wants to do it.

“There won’t be,” Garrett told the publication when asked when there would be one. “And I’m just saying that because that’s something that Ray and Phil [Rosenthal, the show’s creator] have always said.” Star and creator Ray Romano was a centerpiece of the show and if he doesn’t want to do it, there won’t be a series. But according to Garrett, there is another reason a reboot wouldn’t work: The unfortunate passing of Doris Roberts and Peter Boyle.

There is no show without the parents,” Garrett told the publication. “They were the catalyst, and to do anything that would resemble that wouldn’t be right to the audiences or to the loyal fan base. And it was about those two families, and you can’t get around that.” Even though a reboot doesn’t seem likely, Garrett did share that he is grateful to have been a part of the series. “I know [the reboot] won’t happen, but 30 years later, I got very lucky to get on that bus. I’m very grateful,” he said.

Ray Romano Admitted to Doing a Binge-Watch

Everybody Loves Raymond is still available to binge-watch, which is what Romano himself admitted to doing. The actor said that when the show was airing, he was hard on the series, but now he can appreciate what they made a bit more. “I got on a little kick there. I hadn’t seen the episodes,” Romano told PEOPLE at the time. “They took on a new look to me. I was appreciating them more. I was very hard on them back then… But you see when you’re removed from it a little, I felt like an audience member. And then I said, ‘Let me rate them.’ I rated them, and I was hard on some.”

You can see Garrett and Romano on older episodes of Everybody Loves Raymond.
