Having recently overtaken Steven Spielberg’s Jaws to become the second-biggest horror movie in domestic box office history, Sinners is nearing the end of its phenomenal theatrical run. The movie is already available on PVOD services, but that didn’t stop it from passing another milestone at the global box office this weekend. Directed by Ryan Coogler, Sinners has been uncommonly successful domestically, although its performance in overseas markets has only reaffirmed assumptions around movies led by a predominantly Black cast.
With $275 million domestically and another $85 million from overseas markets, Sinners’ cumulative global haul now stands at $360 million. It’s currently the sixth-biggest horror movie in global box office history, behind the first It blockbuster, Jaws, It: Chapter Two, The Exorcist, and The Nun. It needs to gross only $2 million more in order to pass The Nun and become the fifth-biggest horror hit in global box office history. This weekend, Sinners also surpassed the lifetime global haul of another Spielberg film, Minority Report.
Released in 2002, Minority Report starred Tom Cruise and Colin Farrell; it grossed a total of $358 million at the worldwide box office, against a reported budget of $102 million. The great critic Roger Ebert called it a “virtuoso high-wire act” in his review, and awarded it four stars out of four. Sinners was produced on a reported budget of $90 million, with Coogler striking a rather unusual deal with Warner Bros., which will see the film’s rights revert to him after 25 years.
‘Sinners’ Remains One of the Best-Reviewed Films of 2025
He intends to expand the property into a franchise, and considering how successful Sinners has been, this shouldn’t be a problem. Starring Michael B. Jordan in dual roles, the movie opened to incredible reviews. It appears to have settled at a “certified fresh” 97% Rotten Tomatoes score. Sinners’ audience score on the aggregator website is just as impressive, at 96%. You can watch the film in theaters and at home, and only wonder what sorcery Coogler is cooking up next.
