July Will Be a Huge Month for Fans of the ‘RoboCop’ Franchise

Get ready to spend some time with Officer Murphy on the rough streets of Detroit. Fans of the RoboCop franchise have just received some good news, as streaming service Tubi has revealed that all four films in the saga will be arriving on the free platform next month. This includes the original three films released in the 1980s and 1990s, as well as the reboot that came out in 2014.

All four films will be available to stream on Tubi beginning on July 1, among a slew of new pieces of content being added to the platform next month. The original RoboCop was released in 1987; the sequel, RoboCop 2, in 1990; and the last film in the trilogy, RoboCop 3, in 1993. Fans will likely be most enthused about the original film, given that the sequels in the franchise were critically panned. The 2014 reboot of the original film, also being added to Tubi, likewise received mixed reviews, and holds a 49% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

‘RoboCop’ Has Become an Iconic Franchise

The RoboCop franchise has become one of the most well-known entries in the sci-fi/cyberpunk realm. The original film, directed by Paul Verhoeven, followed Detroit Police Officer Alex Murphy (Peter Weller), who is brutally murdered by a gang and revived as the cybernetic police cyborg RoboCop. At first, RoboCop’s no-nonsense, by-the-book law enforcement endears him to his fellow officers. But there is a dark secret lying at the heart of RoboCop’s builders, Omni Consumer Products – which RoboCop must unravel while also trying to salvage his past.

The original RoboCop was acclaimed by critics and is widely considered one of the best sci-fi films of the 1980s – indicative of the dark, gritty nature of the decade. Weller would reprise his role in RoboCop 2 before Robert Burke took over for the third installment. Joel Kinnaman portrays the cyborg in the 2014 remake. No future films have been announced, but there may be more robots on the city streets yet, as Amazon MGM and Prime Video are reportedly in the works on a RoboCop television series from producer James Wan. This wouldn’t be an entirely new phenomenon, as an animated RoboCop series debuted in 1988 and a live-action show debuted in 1994, though both were short-lived.

The RoboCop franchise will be available to stream on Tubi beginning on July 1. Stay tuned to Collider for more info on the RoboCop Prime Video series.
