This is a special year for Sanrio fans. Two of the most famous characters from the company – aside from Hello Kitty – are celebrating landmark anniversaries, and Netflix paired them together for an exciting and cute new series that just rolled out its first trailer. My Melody & Kuromi will follow the title characters as they are forced to put their differences aside and save the future of Mariland. The stop-motion animated series is set to premiere on July 24.
The trailer for My Melody & Kuromi highlights the wild differences between the two characters. My Melody runs a successful candy shop that is always filled with customers, while Kuromi works across the river in a Japanese sweets shop that doesn’t attract many visitors. This means that Kuromi is determined to take down her rival, but everything changes when My Melody gets transported to a world where she finds a magical heart. The heart has mysterious powers, and when it starts wreaking havoc, My Melody asks Kuromi for help.
My Melody & Kuromi will be a pretty easy binge: Aside from the dream-like visuals of the series, the season will be spread across 12 episodes that are roughly 13 minutes long. For fans, it will be a walk in a cotton-candy park, and those who aren’t too familiar with Sanrio characters won’t have a problem watching episodes back-to-back.
‘My Melody & Kuromi’ Is the Celebration of a Legacy
The new series is a celebration of Sanrio’s legacy. My Melody is celebrating her 50th anniversary in 2025, while Kuromi celebrates the 20th. The theme song of the series is performed by world-famous girl group LE SSERAFIM, who composed the theme song “Kawaii” for the series. The story was written by Shuko Nemoto (At the Bench) during the pandemic. In an official statement, the writer celebrated the release of the series and wrote that My Melody & Kuromi “is filled with love for the world of My Melody, beloved by people of all ages. I believe everyone, from adults to children, will have favorite scenes and lines.”
Visionary director Tomoki Misato (Pui Pui Molcar) helms the episodes from the series, and stated that it “pushes the limits of stop-motion.” In order to find out exactly what he means, though, we will have to wait until the series debuts on Netflix.
