Joseph Kosinski is ready to fire up the engines again—this time, with a crossover no one saw coming. The Top Gun: Maverick director told GQ UK that his dream sequel to the recently-released F1 film starring Brad Pitt would involve one hell of a return: Tom Cruise as Days of Thunder’s Cole Trickle. That’s right—Kosinski wants to reunite Cruise and Pitt on the racetrack, reviving their on-screen chemistry three decades after they last shared the screen in 1994’s Interview With the Vampire.
“Well, right now, it’d be Cole Trickle, who was [Cruise’s] Days of Thunder character—we find out that he and [Brad Pitt’s] Sonny Hayes have a past,” Kosinski teased. “They were rivals at some point, maybe crossed paths… I heard about this epic go-kart battle on Interview With a Vampire that Brad and Tom had, and who wouldn’t pay to see those two go head-to-head on the track?”
Kosinski previously tried to unite the two stars for his own version of Ford v Ferrari, which would’ve featured Pitt and Cruise doing their own racing. The project ultimately didn’t move forward due to budget concerns, and the gig went to James Mangold, with Christian Bale and Matt Damon in the driver’s seat. Still, Kosinski says he came close. “Yeah, I got close with that,” he admitted. “But yeah, you know, everything worked out for the best. I got to do F1. But anything’s possible.”
Will Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt Work Together Again?
Anything could now include a full-blown crossover sequel that brings back Cruise as Trickle—who hasn’t been seen on screen since Days of Thunder raced into theaters in 1990. That idea might not be as far-fetched as it sounds: Cruise has already confirmed he’s exploring a follow-up. Speaking on Today Show Australia in May while promoting Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, Cruise said he’s “thinking and talking about what could we do and what’s possible” when it comes to a Days of Thunder sequel.
Pitt, for his part, recently told E! News that he’d be open to working with Cruise again—on one condition: “I’m not gonna hang my ass off airplanes and sh*t like that.” Fair enough. While Cruise has made a career of pushing the limits of physics, Pitt seems more content keeping both feet (and wheels) on the ground. Still, the actor showed his support at the London premiere of F1, posing with Kosinski and celebrating the high-octane drama that he stars in as Sonny Hayes.
F1 is in theaters now.
